Description: beta-Defensins are small antimicrobial peptides of the innate immune system produced in response to microbial infection of mucosal tissue and skin. We demonstrate that murine beta-defensin 2 (mDF2beta) acts directly on immature dendritic cells as an endogenous ligand for Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR-4), inducing up-regulation of costimulatory molecules and dendritic cell maturation. These events, in turn, trigger robust, type 1 polarized adaptive immune responses in vivo, suggesting that mDF2beta may play an important role in immunosurveillance against pathogens and, possibly, self antigens or tumor antigens.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Biragyn, Arya -- Ruffini, Pier Adelchi -- Leifer, Cynthia A -- Klyushnenkova, Elena -- Shakhov, Alexander -- Chertov, Oleg -- Shirakawa, Aiko K -- Farber, Joshua M -- Segal, David M -- Oppenheim, Joost J -- Kwak, Larry W -- N0L-CO-12400/CO/NCI NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2002 Nov 1;298(5595):1025-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Experimental Transplantation and Immunology Branch, National Cancer Institute, Bethesda, MD 20892, USA. arya@mail.ncifcrf.gov〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12411706" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Description: Concentrations of acetyl-coenzyme A and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD(+)) affect histone acetylation and thereby couple cellular metabolic status and transcriptional regulation. We report that the ketone body d-beta-hydroxybutyrate (betaOHB) is an endogenous and specific inhibitor of class I histone deacetylases (HDACs). Administration of exogenous betaOHB, or fasting or calorie restriction, two conditions associated with increased betaOHB abundance, all increased global histone acetylation in mouse tissues. Inhibition of HDAC by betaOHB was correlated with global changes in transcription, including that of the genes encoding oxidative stress resistance factors FOXO3A and MT2. Treatment of cells with betaOHB increased histone acetylation at the Foxo3a and Mt2 promoters, and both genes were activated by selective depletion of HDAC1 and HDAC2. Consistent with increased FOXO3A and MT2 activity, treatment of mice with betaOHB conferred substantial protection against oxidative stress.〈br /〉〈br /〉〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3735349/" target="_blank"〉〈img src="https://static.pubmed.gov/portal/portal3rc.fcgi/4089621/img/3977009" border="0"〉〈/a〉   〈a href="https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3735349/" target="_blank"〉This paper as free author manuscript - peer-reviewed and accepted for publication〈/a〉〈br /〉〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Shimazu, Tadahiro -- Hirschey, Matthew D -- Newman, John -- He, Wenjuan -- Shirakawa, Kotaro -- Le Moan, Natacha -- Grueter, Carrie A -- Lim, Hyungwook -- Saunders, Laura R -- Stevens, Robert D -- Newgard, Christopher B -- Farese, Robert V Jr -- de Cabo, Rafael -- Ulrich, Scott -- Akassoglou, Katerina -- Verdin, Eric -- P30 DK026743/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- P30 DK063720/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- R01 DK056084/DK/NIDDK NIH HHS/ -- T32 AG000212/AG/NIA NIH HHS/ -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2013 Jan 11;339(6116):211-4. doi: 10.1126/science.1227166. Description: The locations of the pole and rotation axis of asteroid 25143 Itokawa were derived from Asteroid Multiband Imaging Camera data on the Hayabusa spacecraft. The retrograde pole orientation had a right ascension of 90.53 degrees and a declination of -66.30 degrees (52000 equinox) or equivalently 128.5 degrees and -89.66 degrees in ecliptic coordinates with a 3.9 degrees margin of error. The surface area is 0.393 square kilometers, the volume is 0.018378 cubic kilometers with a 5% margin of error, and the three axis lengths are 535 meters by 294 meters by 209 meters. The global Itokawa revealed a boomerang-shaped appearance composed of two distinct parts with partly faceted regions and a constricted ring structure.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Demura, Hirohide -- Kobayashi, Shingo -- Nemoto, Etsuko -- Matsumoto, Naoya -- Furuya, Motohiro -- Yukishita, Akira -- Muranaka, Noboru -- Morita, Hideo -- Shirakawa, Ken -- Maruya, Makoto -- Ohyama, Hiroshi -- Uo, Masashi -- Kubota, Takashi -- Hashimoto, Tatsuaki -- Kawaguchi, Jun'ichiro -- Fujiwara, Akira -- Saito, Jun -- Sasaki, Sho -- Miyamoto, Hideaki -- Hirata, Naru -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2006 Jun 2;312(5778):1347-9.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Department of Computer Software, University of Aizu, Ikki-machi, Aizu-Wakamatsu City, Fukushima 965-8580, Japan.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16741112" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉

Notes: Optically transparent, ferromagnetic films of Fe-F, Co-F, and Ni-F have been prepared by rf sputtering from powder-compacted targets of FeF3, CoF3, and NiF2. The films are amorphous, containing a small amount of crystalline fluoride. Some films showed perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, high coercivity (700–1500 Oe), and fairly high remanence ratio (0.23–0.7). Faraday rotation coefficients of 104 deg/cm at a wavelength of 633 nm were found.

Notes: Films have been preprared by sputtering over a wide range of compositions in the Fe-B-F system. Fluorine was supplied by rf sputtering from an FeF3 target, and Fe-B by dc sputtering from arc-melted targets. Most of the samples were amorphous, although some contained a relatively small fraction of crystalline FeF2. The films were ferromagnetic, with Curie temperatures above room temperature and with room-temperature saturation magnetizations of 60 to 150 emu/g. Large Faraday coefficients, up to 105 deg/cm at 633 nm and fairly large Kerr rotations were observed.

Notes: MnAlGe is a ferromagnet with a unique crystal structure including two-dimensional arrays of Mn atoms in it. In order to find the magnetic properties characteristic of this structure, magnetic and electric measurements were made for Mn0.9M0.1AlGe (M:Mn, Cr, Fe) and MnGaGe. It has been found that the susceptibility above the Curie temperature (TC) does not obey the Curie–Weiss law over the very wide temperature range. Obtained susceptibility vs temperature curves are well expressed by a formula χg=C/(T−θa)γ with a composition dependent parameter γ ranging from about 1.3 to 1.5. In MnAlGe the formula with γ=1.49 holds in the whole temperature range from just above TC (=503 K) to Tt (=853 K, a temperature of solid-state transition). The Curie temperature of Mn1−xMxAlGe(x≤0.2) varies monotonically when they are plotted against the averaged number of d electrons per transition-metal atom. The temperature dependencies of saturation magnetization and electric resistivity were also measured for these specimens.
