    Description: The tale of cyclic GMP has been astonishing. Having overcome an initial disbelief, cyclic GMP has risen to its present eminence as a premium cellular signal transduction messenger of not only hormonal extracellular but also of the intracellular signals. This research topic focuses on the pathways and functions of membrane guanylate cyclases in different tissues of the body and their interplay with intracellular sensory signals where in many cases, cyclic GMP along with Ca2+ have taken on roles as synarchic co-messengers.

    Description: We study the thickness effect of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7−δ (YBCO) in YBCO/La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) bilayer films, fabricated on LaAlO 3 (001) substrate using pulsed laser deposition technique. The thickness dependent transport behavior of YBCO layer in considered bilayer systems demonstrate a clear onset critical temperature at 60 K and 80 K for 100 nm and 200 nm thick YBCO layer systems, respectively, whereas 50 nm thick YBCO system reveals complete suppression in the superconductivity. With the increase in thickness of YBCO layer, the magnetoresistance (MR) data show both positive and negative MR. The positive MR in superconducting regime dominates the negative MR, suppress the double exchange interaction. The maximum magnetoresistance ratio ∼81% at 64 K and ∼47% at 30 K temperature are observed for 200 nm and 100 nm YBCO layers, respectively. In YBCO(200 nm)/LSMO(200 nm) bilayer specimen, the temperature co-efficient of resistance is ∼8.4% K −1 at 72 K which can be practical for bolometric performances and temperature sensors.

    Description: Metal-Ferroelectric-Insulator-Semiconductor (MFIS) structure with 20 nm thin lead zirconate titanate (PZT) ferroelectric film and 6 nm ultrathin high- κ titanium oxynitride (TiO x N y ) insulator layer on p-Si substrate were fabricated. Effect of constant voltage stress (CVS) on electrical characteristics of MFIS structure was investigated to study the reliability of fabricated devices. The experimental results showed trivial variation in memory window ( ΔW ) from 1.05 to 1 V under CVS of 0 to 15 V (5.76 MV/cm) at sweep voltage of ±5 V. Also, leakage current density (J) reduced from 5.57 to 1.94  μ A/cm 2 under CVS of 5.76 MV/cm, supported by energy band diagram. It signifies highly reliable TiO x N y buffer layer for Ferroelectric Random Access Memory. After programming at ±5 V, the high (C H ) and low (C L ) capacitances reliability remains distinguishable for 5000 s even if we extrapolate measured data to 15 years. Microstructures analysis of XRD reveals the formation of (100) and (111) orientation of PZT and TiO x N y , respectively. Thus, Au/PZT/TiO x N y /Si, MFIS gate stacks can be potential candidate for next generation reliable Ferroelectric Field Effect Transistors.

    Description: It has been postulated that there is a link between age related degenerative diseases and cancer. The TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) has been shown to selectively kill tumor cells by binding to pro-apoptotic and anti-apoptotic receptors. Our aim was to study the levels of anti-apoptotic receptor (DcR1) in age related macular degeneration (AMD) and controls. AMD patients (115) were classified into two groups: Dry and Wet AMD. Wet AMDs were further classified into occult, predominant classic and minimal classic. 61 healthy individuals were recruited as normal controls. After normalization with total protein, DcR1 levels were analyzed by ELISA. Mann Whitney U-statistic was used for analysis of DcR1 ELISA results. We have observed DcR1 levels in serum sample which were significantly lower in AMD patients as compared to controls (p = 0.001). On the other hand, we did not find difference in DcR1 levels between wet and dry AMD. The present study defines the plausible role of DcR1 in AMD pathology signifying a new therapeutic target for AMD. Scientific Reports 4 doi: 10.1038/srep04114

    Description: The recent advances in microbiome studies have revealed the role of gut microbiota in altering the pharmacological properties of oral drugs, which contributes to patient-response variation and undesired effect of the drug molecule. These studies are essential to guide us for achieving the desired efficacy and pharmacological activity of the existing drug molecule or for discovering novel and more effective therapeutics. However, one of the main limitations is the lack of atomistic details on the binding and metabolism of these drug molecules by gut-microbial enzymes. Therefore, in this study, for a well-known and important FDA-approved cardiac glycoside drug, digoxin, we report the atomistic details and energy economics for its binding and metabolism by the Cgr2 protein of Eggerthela lenta DSM 2243 . It was observed that the binding pocket of digoxin to Cgr2 primarily involved the negatively charged polar amino acids and a few non-polar hydrophobic residues. The drug digoxin was found to bind Cgr2 at the same binding site as that of fumarate, which is the proposed natural substrate. However, digoxin showed a much lower binding energy (17.75 ±2 Kcal mol −1 ) than the binding energy (42.17 ±2 Kcal mol −1 ) of fumarate. This study provides mechanistic insights into the structural and promiscuity-based metabolism of widely used cardiac drug digoxin and presents a methodology, which could be useful to confirm the promiscuity-based metabolism of other orally administrated drugs by gut microbial enzymes and also help in designing strategies for improving the efficacy of the drugs.
