    Description: Field investigations reveal that the 2014 M w  6.9 Yutian earthquake on the left-lateral strike-slip Altyn Tagh fault (ATF) system, Tibetan Plateau, produced an ~25-km-long surface rupture zone that contains conjugate Riedel shear faults. The coseismic surface ruptures occurred mainly along two parallel east-northeast-trending active left-lateral strike-slip faults. Rupture also occurred in a conjugate, west-northwest-trending zone along an active right-lateral strike-slip fault. The east-northeast-trending ruptures are concentrated in a zone of 〈500-m wide and ~25-km long, and are characterized by Riedel shear structures including distinct shear faults (Y) with a maximum sinistral displacement of ~1 m, right-stepping en echelon cracks, and mole tracks. In contrast, the west-northwest-trending ruptures occur within a zone of up to 1.5-km wide and ~4-km long in the jog area between the two parallel east-northeast-trending faults, and this zone is characterized by discontinuous shear faults with dextral displacements of 〈0.5 m, left-stepping en echelon cracks, and mole tracks, all oriented oblique to the east-northeast-trending rupture zones at an angle of 30°–40°. The lengths and displacements of the coseismic surface ruptures measured in the field are comparable with those obtained from the empirical relationships between magnitude and coseismic surface rupture length and displacement. Our findings demonstrate that the coseismic conjugate Riedel faulting was controlled mainly by preexisting active faults of the ATF system, reflecting the present-day tectonic stress field associated with the ongoing penetration of the Indian Plate into the Eurasian Plate.

    Description: Monolayer black phosphorus (MBP) is a strong candidate for applications in emerging electronic devices. In this work, we report theoretical calculations of impurity limited carrier mobility of MBP using a state-of-the-art first principles quantum transport method where density functional theory is carried out within nonequilibrium Green's function formalism and multiple impurity scattering is calculated by coherent potential approximation. We predict mobilities of both hole and electron carriers due to carbon (C) and sulfur (S) impurity atoms. For impurities concentrations ranging from 0.6% to very high 2.0%, the mobilities drop from several hundreds (in cm 2 / Vs ) to less than 100 in the armchair direction (AC) and show less variation in the zigzag (ZZ) one. The mobilities at smaller impurity concentration range are consistent with the various experimentally reported values. For the entire range, hole mobility is slightly larger than electron mobility in the AC direction and an order of magnitude smaller in the ZZ direction.

    Description: REPRESSOR OF SILENCING 1 (ROS1) is a DNA demethylation enzyme that was previously identified during a genetic screen for the silencing of both RD29A-LUC and 35S-NPTII transgenes on a T-DNA construct. Here we performed a genetic screen to identify additional mutants in which the 35S-NPTII transgene is silenced. We identified several alleles of ros1 and of the following components of the RNA-directed DNA methylation (RdDM) pathway: NRPD1 (the largest subunit of polymerase IV), RDR2, NRPE1 (the largest subunit of polymerase V), NRPD2, AGO4, and DMS3. Our results show that the silencing of 35S-NPTII in the RdDM pathway mutants is due to the reduced expression of ROS1 in the mutants. We also identified a putative histone acetyltransferase (ROS4) from the genetic screen. The acetyltransferase contains a PHD-finger domain that binds to unmethylated histone H3K4. The mutation in ROS4 led to reduction of H3K18 and H3K23 acetylation levels. We show that the silencing of 35S-NPTII and some transposable element genes was released by the ddm1 mutation but that this also required ROS4. Our study identifies a unique antisilencing factor, and reveals that the RdDM pathway has an antisilencing function due to its role in maintaining ROS1 expression.

    Description: :  A challenge in biodata analysis is to understand the underlying phenomena among many interactions in signaling pathways. Such study is formulated as the pathway enrichment analysis, which identifies relevant pathways functional enriched in high-throughput data. The question faced here is how to analyze different data types in a unified and integrative way by characterizing pathways that these data simultaneously reveal. To this end, we developed integrative Pathway Enrichment Analysis Platform, iPEAP , which handles transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics and GWAS data under a unified aggregation schema. iPEAP emphasizes on the ability to aggregate various pathway enrichment results generated in different high-throughput experiments, as well as the quantitative measurements of different ranking results, thus providing the first benchmark platform for integration, comparison and evaluation of multiple types of data and enrichment methods.     Description: Coherent twin boundaries (CTBs) in nano-twinned materials could improve crack resistance. However, the role of the CTBs during crack penetration has never been explored at atomic scale. Our in situ observation on nano-twinned Ag under a high resolution transmission electron microscope (HRTEM) reveals the dynamic processes of a crack penetration across the CTBs, which involve alternated crack tip blunting, crack deflection, twinning/detwinning and slip transmission across the CTBs. The alternated blunting processes are related to the emission of different types of dislocations at the crack tip and vary with the distance of the crack tip from the CTBs.     Description: The large-scale practical application of fuel cells will be difficult to realize if the expensive platinum-based electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) cannot be replaced by other efficient, low-cost, and stable electrodes. Here, we report that vertically aligned nitrogen-containing carbon nanotubes (VA-NCNTs) can act as a metal-free electrode with a much better electrocatalytic activity, long-term operation stability, and tolerance to crossover effect than platinum for oxygen reduction in alkaline fuel cells. In air-saturated 0.1 molar potassium hydroxide, we observed a steady-state output potential of -80 millivolts and a current density of 4.1 milliamps per square centimeter at -0.22 volts, compared with -85 millivolts and 1.1 milliamps per square centimeter at -0.20 volts for a platinum-carbon electrode. The incorporation of electron-accepting nitrogen atoms in the conjugated nanotube carbon plane appears to impart a relatively high positive charge density on adjacent carbon atoms.
