Notes: Abstract An attempt is made to determine the probability of finding a nucleon, in the independent pair model of nuclear matter, as a member of an alpha-particle cluster. Approximate solutions of the Bethe-Goldstone equation furnish analytical expressions for the two-particle correlations of nuclear matter; the potential of Gomeset al. (hard core and attractive square well) is used taking into account the influence of the pair's total momentum. From these functions an approximate four-particle density matrix is constructed. Computation of its overlap integral with the alpha-particle wave function ofMang leads to the alpha-cluster probability as a function of the particle density. For extreme dilution the independent pair model fails. If our results for higher densities, however, are taken to supplement those ofClark andWang, we may conclude that, in addition to the alpha particles they find in the surface of heavy nuclei, a like number occurs at higher densities, the sharp boundary of their completely clustered surface shell being smeared out. In Appendix C we note the results on the energy per nucleon of nuclear matter derived from our wave functions. It turns out that properly taking into account the total momentum of each pair amounts to a correction of several MeV.

Notes: Abstract The response function, which is directly related to the cross section for inelastic scattering of electrons from nuclear matter, is calculated with the help of a time-dependent perturbation theory using a separable potential. All diagrams through second order in the interaction are computed and their contributions compared. The self-energy problem is examined, and it is concluded that a Hartree-Fock approximation is preferable to one which attempts to takeK-matrix insertions into account. Results for the response function are compared with those of previous workers.

Notes: Abstract The decomposition of the ground state wave function of a Fermi gas interacting via hard core potentials into cluster functionsS n leads to a systematic expansion of wave function and energy in powers of the parameterc=P F r c (r c =hard core radius,P F =Fermi momentum). For instance,S n has the order of magnitudec n-λ-1, if λ=number of Fermion coordinates with distances smaller thanr c . The first three energy terms agree with the ones given by other authors. Any occurrence of singular terms in the intermediate steps of the derivation can be avoided

Notes: Abstract The effect of the neutron-proton interactions on nuclear binding energiesB(N, Z) has been investigated. Certain linear combinations of theB(N, Z) which can be interpreted as neutron-proton pairing energies have been computed for Sn and Sb isotopes and compared with experimental data. The coupling constants can be determined as well as some spins, parities and energies of levels of odd-odd nuclei predicted.

Notes: Abstract The formalism for the coupled-channel analysis of stripping reactions of complex nuclear projectiles by nuclei is presented. The general adiabatic approximation is developed. The indirect transitions that are considered are those which arise via intermediate rotational excitations of the target and product nuclei, i.e. the adiabatic approximation for rotational bands is used. At the same time the generalized DWBA procedure is considered for the intrinsic states. Also the antisymmetrization problem is solved. A new method for the calculation of the matrix elements of the (α,n) stripping reaction with finite range effective forces is developed. The method is based on an expansion of the radial functions which describe the relative motion in terms of harmonic oscillator wave functions multiplied by a Gauss one. Effective forces of Gauss type are assumed between the outgoing neutron and each captured nucleon

Notes: Abstract Static photon intensities and correlations, intensity linewidths, and transient behaviour of a two-mode laser near and between the modes' thresholds have been calculated as functions of external pumping, of the coupling strength between the modes, and of detuning. Several curves, summarizing our results, are reported and discussed.

Notes: Abstract The structure of Jastrow and exact many body theory (in expS-form) are compared. The results are: 1. The correct linked clusters can be computed in terms of Jastrow correlation functions; 2. especially the Bethe-Goldstone (or defect) wave functions are defined uniquely and differ from those used in former comparisons; 3. one should use the (Jastrow) “model energy” instead of the expectation value thereby avoiding violation of the Pauli principle and some problems with higher order terms.

Notes: A scheme for calculating expectation values in coupled-cluster wave functions is given. The unlinked terms originating from the norm of the wave function are eliminated. Hermiticity and trace conditions for the density matrices are exhibited in such a way as to guarantee their conservation in any reasonable truncation scheme.
