Summary In winter, the water of the German Bight is mostly vertically mixed and 100% saturated with oxygen. In spring, stratification begins to develop and different oxygen concentrations are occuring in the upper and lower water layer. This is documented at the four automatic monitoring stations of the German Bight, where calibration measurements were carried out monthly from spring till autumn during the years 1990 and 1991. Both annual cycles show an average development of the oxygen situation without extreme values. However, considerably higher near-surface oxygen concentrations may occur as well as considerably lower near-bottom values, due to biological activity and depending on the hydrographical situation. Some examples are compiled at the end of this paper.

Zusammenfassung Im Winter ist das Wasser der Deutschen Bucht meist vertikal durchmischt und zu 100% mit Sauerstoff gesättigt. Mit beginnender Schichtung im Frühjahr entwickeln sich die Sauerstoffgehalte in der oberen und unteren Wasserschicht unterschiedlich. Dies wird an den vier Meßnetzstationen der Deutschen Bucht dokumentiert, wo von Frühjahr bis Herbst der Jahre 1990 und 1991 monatlich Eichmessungen durchgeführt wurden. Die beiden Jahresgänge ziegen eine durchschnittliche Entwicklung der Sauerstoffsituation ohne Extremwerte. Abhängig vom biologischen Geschehen und von der hydrographischen Situation können jedoch wesentlich höhere Sauerstoffgehalte in Oberflächennähe auftreten und erheblich niedrigere Werte in Bodennähe. Beispiele dafür sind am Schluß der Arbeit zusammengestellt.
