    Notes: A 2-D numerical finite-difference model has been developed to calculate the thermal conductivity of a composite material. The method is general in that the distribution of components within the material can be ordered or random. Results from the calculations are compared with those based on a geometric model in which the conductivity of the composite depends on the volume fractions of the different components and with conductivities calculated using real-space renormalization group theory (RSRG) and the effective medium approximation (EMA). The results from the present work compare well with the geometric model and the EMA, whereas the RSRG results generally indicate lower conductivities. Possible reasons for the differences between the RSRG theory and the other methods are discussed.

    Notes: The heat flow equation in cylindrical coordinates is solved numerically for any general distribution of thermal diffusivity. The temperature stabilization of a borehole is considered, and solutions for the case where thermal diffusivity is a function of radial distance from the borehole are obtained and compared to solutions for uniform diffusivity. The results are discussed in terms of thermal diffusivities that are different for the well contents and for the surrounding material. It is found that the approach to formation temperature is affected by differences between well contents and the surrounding region.

    Notes: Two methods for estimating the true formation temperature from well logs are compared. One method requires knowledge of the circulation time, whereas the other requires an estimate of the thermal diffusivity of the contents of the well. Both methods require three or more successive bottom-hole temperature measurements. Data from 157 wells have been analyzed, and the calculated formation temperatures from the two methods agree well. By an analysis of best matching of the two methods, it is found that 0.35 × 10-6 m2 s-1 is a good estimate for the thermal diffusivity of the well contents.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal gradients have been calculated and heat flow estimates made for 34 petroleum exploration wells along four regional profiles crossing the Mesozoic-Cenozoic Beaufort-Mackenzie Basin of northern Canada. The geothermal gradients vary from 22 mKm−1 to 44 mKm−1. Four sets of possible thermal conductivity values were used to calculate a range of heat flow values for each well. Generally low heat flow is observed in wells within the deeper portions of the basin and higher heat flow values occur in wells along the Aklavik Arch Complex which forms the southeastern margin of the basin. The contribution to heat flow by heat generation below the Mesozoic-Cenozoic basin fill sediments has been considered. The heat flow contribution from sub-Mesozoic sedimentary strata and underlying basement is highest along the basin-bounding Aklavik Arch Complex. The decrease in heat flow from below the basin fill sediments toward the basin depocenter may be related to basinward crustal thinning and corresponding reductions in intra-crustal radiogenic heat production.

    Notes: Abstract A temperature-transient method to estimatein situ formation thermal conductivity and equilibrium formation temperature using circulation fluid flow-rate pulses is described. Flow-rate changes induce temperature variations in the well and the time from when the flow alters to the subsequent maximum or minimum temperature of the drilling fluid can be used to determine these two formation parameters. Some examples are presented to illustrate the method.
