    Notes: The effect of two heights of cutting (5 and 8 cm) on the dry matter harvested and persistency of a range of different grass species and varieties were monitored over a 3-year period (1976 to 1978). Dry matter harvested was measured in the second and third harvest year and persistence of sown grass was assessed at the end of the first and third harvest year. The grasses were managed under a frequent cutting system, i.e. simulated grazing. Results showed that at the low cutting height tetraploid hybrid ryegrasses and diploid Italian ryegrasses in the third harvest year gave lower annual dry matter harvests of sown grass and were less persistent than at the high cutting height, whilst, in contrast, perennial ryegrasses gave higher annual harvests of sown grass but persistency was unaffected. In general at the low cutting height varieties of cocksfoot, meadow fescue and tall fescue gave comparatively higher annual harvests of sown grass in the second harvest year but lower yields of sown grass in the third harvest year. A notable exception was Cambria cocksfoot which in the second harvest year gave higher yields of sown grass and was more persistent at the low cutting height.However, at 5 cm cutting height, the proportions of weed grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in swards sown to tetraploid hybrid ryegrasses and diploid Italian ryegrasses were generally greater, particularly in mid-season.

    Notes: Productivity, seasonal growth and persistence of 10 perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) varieties were assessed al an upland (305 m) and lowland (30 m) site in mid-Wales. Averaged over 3 harvest years (1979–81), mean dry matter (DM) production at 8.8 t ha−1 was 22% lower in the upland environment, with spring (April and May) growth showing greatest contrast varying from only 6% of that in the lowland in 1979, after a severe winter, to 113% in 1981.Relative ranking of varieties differed considerably between the two environments and no correlation was found between DM production at the two sites (r= 0.5945). Early heading varieties performed better in the spring than late types at the upland site. A comparison of the results with those published from official variety testing trials gave a positive relationship under lowland conditions (r= 0.7162*) but no correlation with those from the upland centre (r= 0.1969).The findings of the study show that relative productivity of varieties, but not persistency, differs between upland and lowland environments.

    Notes: A field investigation into the effect of slurry seeding on the dry-matter yield and persistence of an Italian ryegrass sward was assessed over a 3-year period (1984–86) under a regime of three cuts per season combined with sheep grazing in early spring and late autumn. Results showed that slurry plus seed treatments produced up to 30% more herbage dry matter and a significantly higher tiller density than where no slurry or seed were used. Slurry application with and without seed also reduced the proportion of weed grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in the sward. It is concluded that slurry seeding is a useful technique for extending the productive life of an Italian ryegrass sward.

    Notes: The effect of management on dry matter yield and persistence of eight cultivars was assessed over a 3-year period (1978–80) under integration of sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing with cutting for conservation, and the two cutting frequencies used in the National List trials. A high correlation was obtained in the first and second harvest years between managements in respect of annual production, the ranking order of yield being similar for the range of cultivars. In the third harvest year yield correlation and persistence between sheep grazing and simulated sheep grazing was high and similar to previous years, but all other yield and persistence correlations were considerably reduced. A major effect of frequent cutting management used in the National List trials was the increase in the proportion of unsown grasses (mainly Poa spp.) in the swards.

    Notes: Cultural explanations of economic change were largely dropped for a generation, as economists rejected their inconclusiveness and other social scientists labelled them as politically incorrect. Peter Bauer, however, expressed disquiet at the way deep influences like culture were being ignored in economic analysis. This paper discusses why high-profile attention has now turned back to culture. It does not find the expositions offered to be very persuasive but nevertheless agrees that Bauer's unease was understandable and describes other recent academic studies that are more promising.

    Notes: Three feeding trials with big bale silage were carried out to determine whether previously established intake differences between artificially dried Italian ryegrass cultivars could be repeated under differing conditions of food preparation and presentation. The silage was prepared in 2 consecutive years from the same field crop and fed to groups of cattle in both years. The second year silage was also fed to sheep indoors. All animals were fed ad libitum and the voluntary intakes recorded for groups of cattle and individual sheep. Chewing activity was also recorded on all groups of sheep.The chemical composition of the two cultivars as fresh grass was similar in 1984 but there were small differences in 1983 with Tarquin showing slightly higher organic matter digestibility (DOMD) and lower dry matter and water-soluble carbohydrate compared to RvP. The only consistent differences in silage composition between cultivars was a slightly higher level of modified acid detergent (MAD) fibre in RvP compared to Tarquin. Despite these small differences the voluntary intake of cattle fed Tarquin was 19% higher than RvP in the first year and 35% in the second, while sheep showed a similar difference of 40% with the second year silage.Recording of jaw activity with sheep showed that animals spent 40% more time eating and 27% more time ruminating RvP than Tarquin per unit of food eaten. This suggested that the intake differences, which were independent of digestibility, were related to the physical resistance of the feed to breakdown by chewing. These differences depend on the structural characteristics of the plants and were associated with differences in leaf/stem ratios and MAD-fibre content. These are less likely to be affected by the method of conservation or feed presentation and, although the degree of difference between the cultivars changed with the different procedures, the inherently higher intake of Tarquin persisted.
