Abstract We report a newly observed phenomenon of nucleation and first order phase transition, from superfluid helium-four, in which a metastable solid phase nucleates and grows from the overpressured liquid in preference to the stable phase. We discuss these results in terms of the difference in nucleation probabilities that arise from the different interfacial free energies of the phases.
