    Description: The potential effects of elevated CO2 level and reduced carbonate saturation state in marine environment on fishes and other non-calcified organisms are still poorly known. In present study, we investigated the effects of ocean acidification on embryogenesis and organogenesis of newly hatched larvae of marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) after 21 d exposure of eggs to different artificially acidified seawater (pH 7.6 and 7.2, respectively), and compared with those in control group (pH 8.2). Results showed that CO2-driven seawater acidification (pH 7.6 and 7.2) had no detectable effect on hatching time, hatching rate, and heart rate of embryos. However, the deformity rate of larvae in pH 7.2 treatment was significantly higher than that in control treatment. The left and right sagitta areas did not differ significantly from each other in each treatment. However, the mean sagitta area of larvae in pH 7.6 treatment was significantly smaller than that in the control (p = 0.024). These results suggest that although marine medaka might be more tolerant of elevated CO2 than some other fishes, the effect of elevated CO2 level on the calcification of otolith is likely to be the most susceptibly physiological process of pH regulation in early life stage of marine medaka.

    Notes: AlN thin films were grown on HF-etched Si(111) substrates at 400–600 °C by plasma source molecular beam epitaxy. Reflection high energy electron diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies show that AlN films grown at 400 °C form an initial amorphous region at the interface, followed by c-axis oriented columnar grains with slightly different tilts and twists. AlN films grown at 600 °C showed a significantly reduced amorphous region near the interface promoting an epitaxial growth of AlN with AlN[0001](parallel)Si[111] and AlN[011¯0](parallel)Si[112¯] orientations. However, all the films show numerous defects such as stacking faults, dislocations, and grain boundaries. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Exchange interactions between the holes confined in arrays of strained quantum dots subject to compressive and tensile strain are shown to lead to ferrimagnetic arrangement of magnetic moments. Using example of strained In1−xGaxAs quantum dots on InP substrate, it is shown how magnetic properties of a semiconductor material can be engineered without resorting to doping with magnetic ions, and the Curie temperature is estimated to be of the order of 25 K.     Notes: Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Raman spectra are reported for NaNO3 bulk and for NaNO3 confined in porous silica with pore radii, rp=2.5, 5, 10, 20 nm. Raman spectra are also given for a 6 M solution of NaNO3. The melting transition for the confined NaNO3 exhibits a 1/rp dependence where rp is the pore radius for rp(approximately-greater-than)5 nm. No melting transition is observed for NaNO3 confined in 2.5 nm pores. Above this pore size, their appears to be a deviation in the melting transition dependence on rp. The internal modes observed in the Raman spectra for the confined material are in agreement with those of the bulk solid except for a feature observed on the low frequency side of the ν1 band. The external TO mode observed at 100 cm−1 and the librational mode at 175 cm−1 for NaNO3 both decrease in intensity and broaden as rp decreases and both bands disappear at rp=2.5 nm. An additional peak at 70 cm−1 not observed in the solution or bulk NaNO3 spectra appears in the spectra of confined NaNO3 and increases in intensity as rp decreases. We assign this band to a new phase of NaNO3 which is stabilized by the surface hydroxyl groups of the porous silica. For NaNO3 confined in pores, rp≤2.5 nm, we suggest that NaNO3 exists as disordered aggregates.
