Description: Solid solution composites of ( Ti , V ) 2 AlC / Al 2 O 3 were successfully synthesized using the in situ hot-pressing process by the incorporation of the thermit reaction of Al with V 2 O 5 in Ti , Al , and carbon black system. The phase evolution during the formation of the composites was examined from 500°C to 1350°C, and a possible reaction mechanism was proposed to explain the formation of ( Ti , V ) 2 AlC / Al 2 O 3 solid solution composites. The composite with 10 wt% Al 2 O 3 possesses the best mechanical properties and the hardness, flexural strength, and fracture toughness of the composites are enhanced by 53.2%, 140%, and 180%, respectively. The strengthening and toughening mechanisms were also discussed.

Description: Driven by the continuous demand for system integration and device miniaturization, integrating multiple diversified functions into a single metasurface hybridized with the tunable metaparticle is highly demanding at terahertz (THz) range. However, up to now, because of the limitation of the tunable metaparticle at terahertz range, most of the metasurfaces feature a single function only or process similar functionalities at a single frequency. A reconfigurable multifunctional metasurface which can realize the switch of transmission and reflection and manipulate the linearized polarization state of electromagnetic waves simultaneously over a controllable terahertz frequency range based on the vanadium dioxide was designed for the first time in the paper. The numerical result demonstrates the validity of the appropriately designed metasurface. Simulation results show that the reconfigurable and multifunctional performance of this metasurface can be acquired over 1.59 THz to 1.74 THz without re-optimizing or re-fabricating structures, which effectively extends the operating frequencies. The proposed metasurface holds potential for electromagnetic wave manipulation and this study can motivate the realization of the wideband multifunctional metasurface and the software-driven reconfigurable metasurface at terahertz frequencies.

Description: Materials, Vol. 11, Pages 956: Wide-Band Circularly Polarized ReflectarrayUsing Graphene-Based Pancharatnam-Berry Phase Unit-Cells for Terahertz Communication Materials doi: 10.3390/ma11060956 Authors: Li Deng Yuanyuan Zhang Jianfeng Zhu Chen Zhang A wide-band and high gain circularly polarized (CP) graphene-based reflectarray operating in the THz regime is proposed and theoretically investigated in this paper. The proposed reflectarray consists of a THz CP source and several graphene-based unit-cells. Taking advantages of the Pancharatnam Berry (PB) phase principle, the graphene-based unit-cell is capable of realizing a tunable phase range of 360° in a wide-band (1.4–1.7 THz) by unit-cell rotating, overcoming the restriction of intrinsic narrow-band resonance in graphene. Therefore, this graphene-based unit-cell exhibits superior bandwidth and phase tunability to its previous counterparts. To demonstrate this, a wide-band (1.4–1.7 THz) focusing metasurface based on the proposed unit-cell that exhibits excellent focusing effect was designed. Then, according to the reversibility of the optical path, a CP reflectarray was realized by placing a wide-band CP THz source at the focal point of the metasurface. Numerical simulation demonstrates that this reflectarray can achieve a stable high gain up to 15 dBic and an axial ratio around 2.1 dB over the 1.4–1.7 THz band. The good radiation performance of the proposed CP reflectarray, as demonstrated, underlines its suitability for the THz communication applications. Moreover, the design principle of this graphene-based reflectarray with a full 360° phase range tunable unit-cells provides a new pathway to design high-performance CP reflectarray in the THz regime.

Description: This paper proposes a new rapid simplified inundation model (NRSIM) for flood inundation caused by rainstorms in an urban setting that can simulate the urban rainstorm inundation extent and depth in a data-scarce area. Drainage basins delineated from a floodplain map according to the distribution of the inundation sources serve as the calculation cells of NRSIM. To reduce data requirements and computational costs of the model, the internal topography of each calculation cell is simplified to a circular cone, and a mass conservation equation based on a volume spreading algorithm is established to simulate the interior water filling process. Moreover, an improved D8 algorithm is outlined for the simulation of water spilling between different cells. The performance of NRSIM is evaluated by comparing the simulated results with those from a traditional rapid flood spreading model (TRFSM) for various resolutions of digital elevation model (DEM) data. The results are as follows: (1) given high-resolution DEM data input, the TRFSM model has better performance in terms of precision than NRSIM; (2) the results from TRFSM are seriously affected by the decrease in DEM data resolution, whereas those from NRSIM are not; and (3) NRSIM always requires less computational time than TRFSM. Apparently, compared with the complex hydrodynamic or traditional rapid flood spreading model, NRSIM has much better applicability and cost-efficiency in real-time urban inundation forecasting for data-sparse areas.

Description: IJGI, Vol. 6, Pages 247: GIS-Based Visibility Network and Defensibility Model to Reconstruct Defensive System of the Han Dynasty in Central Xinjiang, China ISPRS International Journal of Geo-Information doi: 10.3390/ijgi6080247 Authors: Jianfeng Zhu Yueping Nie Huaguang Gao Fang Liu Lijun Yu The Silk Road opened during the Han Dynasty, and is significant in global cultural communication. Along this route in the central part of Xinjiang, the archaeological sites with defensive characteristics once provided a safeguard for this area. Reconstructing the defensive system is an important way to explore the ancient culture’s propagation and the organizational structure of these sites. In this research, the compound visibility network with complex network analysis (CNA) and the least-cost paths based on the defensibility models from linear and logistic regression methods constitute the principle defensive structure. As possible transportation corridors, these paths are considered to be mostly fitted to each other in general, and are different from normal slope-based paths. The sites Kuhne Shahr and Agra play important roles for information control according to the CNA measures, while the sites Kuhne Shahr and Kuyux Shahr are considered to be crucial cities due to their positions and structural shapes. Some other sites, including Uzgen Bulak, Shah Kalandar, Chuck Castle, Caladar, and Qiuci, as well as some beacons, have important effects on defending the transportation corridors. This method is proven efficient for the study of the historical role of archaeological sites with defensive characteristics.

Description: Nitraria sibirica Pall., a typical halophyte of great ecological value, is widely distributed in desert, saline, and coastal saline-alkali environments. Consequently, researching the salt tolerance mechanism of N. sibirica Pall. has great significance to the cultivation and utilization of salt-tolerant plants. In this research, RNA-seq, digital gene expression (DGE), and high flux element analysis technologies were used to investigate the molecular and physiological mechanisms related to salt tolerance of N. sibirica Pall. Integrative analysis and de novo transcriptome assembly generated 137,421 unigenes. In total, 58,340 and 34,033 unigenes were annotated with gene ontology (GO) terms and mapped in Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathways, respectively. Three differentially expressed genes (DEGs) libraries were subsequently constructed from the leaves of N. sibirica Pall. seedlings under different treatments: control (CK), light short-term salt stress (CL2), and heavy long-term salt stress (CL6). Eight hundred and twenty-six, and 224 differentially expressed genes were identified in CL2 and CL6 compared to CK, respectively. Finally, ionomic analysis of N. sibirica Pall. seedlings treated with 0, 100, 200 or 300 mM concentrations of NaCl for one day showed that the uptake and distribution of Ca, Cu, Fe, Mg and K in different organs of N. sibirica Pall. were significantly affected by salt stress. Our findings have identified potential genes involved in salt tolerance and in the reference transcriptome and have revealed the salt tolerance mechanism in N. sibirica Pall. These findings will provide further insight into the molecular and physiological mechanisms related to salt stress in N. sibirica Pall. and in other halophytes.
