We report the results of the first high-resolution measurements of the transverse susceptibilities of ultrasoft (Hc〈0.2 Oe, Hk≈0.8 Oe) rotating field annealed amorphous CoB thin films over an extended frequency range of 2–200 MHz. At zero bias, their hard axis susceptibility exhibited a classic relaxation-type response with maximum loss in the 50–70-MHz range. We also systematically measured the dc bias field dependence of the transverse susceptibilities χt(0) and χt(π/2). These data were compared with typical, soft (Hc≈0.6 Oe, Hk≈1.8 Oe) thermally annealed films with the same composition. The transverse susceptibilities χt(0) and χt(π/2) of the soft, thermally annealed samples were irreversible with field. The ultrasoft magnetic thin film, however, exhibited a rotatable anisotropy and completely reversible and continuous χt. These data suggest that the quasistatic and small signal dynamical responses of the magnetization distributions in these ultrasoft films were substantially influenced by the internal dipolar fields associated with the magnetization ripple.
