Notes:
The principles common to three membrane processes, i.e., reverse osmosis, and gas permeation, and pervaporation, involving separating by means of “dense,” i.e., pore-free, synthetic polymer membranes are presented. On the basis of these principles, it is then shown how the requirements placed on the membrane and the modules by the transport mechanism (solution and diffusion) are satisfied. A few examples characteristic of the current state of technology are discussed.
