It is shown that the shape dependence of final state probability distributions in pulsed laser–atom or molecule interactions has a simple explanation in the theory of quantum transport of Floquet states. More precisely, the predictions of a quasienergy resonance model—complex poles in the quasienergy plane produced by quantum transport and populated by state-mixing at near-degeneracies—are successfully compared with numerical solutions of the initial value problem of the Schrödinger equation for a Morse-potential model. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.
