    Notes: Abstract Picea sitchensis and Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings were grown in containers, inoculated with ectomycorrhizal fungi, and planted in British forestry sites. Root samples taken during the year after planting were assessed for mycorrhiza formation. Survival and shoot height were assessed at the end of each year. Observations were made each autumn on the occurrence of sporophores of ectomycorrhizal fungi. Pot experiments were used to assess the colonization potential of soils from the experimental locations. Assessment of mycorrhiza formation by the inoculant fungi both before planting and the following year showed much variation among the fungi used. Similar variation was found among field sites. Inoculation with Laccaria isolates was most successful. Height measurements are reported for the first 2 years after planting, at which time there were few significant effects on growth of Picea sitchensis or Pseudotsuga menziesii seedlings. Experimental assessment of colonization potential was of little value in this work for predicting events in the forest.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of Azotobacter was studied in the rhizosphere of some crop plants grown in this country. Any rhizosphere effect was very small and frequently Azotobacter was suppressed. No cells were recovered from root washings, indicating absence from the root surface. Azotobacter was absent from the rhizosphere in acid soils. Inoculation of seeds, roots, and soil resulted in establishment of high numbers of Azotobacter in the rhizospheres of plants grown in soil of pH above 6.5 and containing a natural Azotobacter population. Seed inoculation was the most practical and led to good establishment throughout the root system, including adventitious roots of wheat. The final population in the rhizosphere depended on the size and age of the initial inoculum applied to the seed. Best results came from spraying seeds with 14-day-old cultures and sowing the seed on the same day.

    Notes: Summary Methods for countingAzotobacter species in soil have been examined. The highest counts were obtained from soil suspensions shaken in sterile distilled water containing 10-g glass beads and plated on to glucose agar. Mannitol has been rejected as a suitable substrate in agar media because it gives lower counts of Azotobacter than glucose, an effect which is further enhanced by drying the agar plates. A clear medium free from precipitated phosphate and CaCO3 is recommended for the agar-plate method; the Azotobacter count is affected by the phosphate concentration. The agar-plate and dilution-tube methods were compared; the latter is less accurate but more convenient when many soil samples have to be examined.

These effects are further influenced by soil type.

    Notes: Summary Occurrence of mycorrhizal types in 4 forest sites and 4 nurseries was determined by mycorrhizal morphology. In total 25 distinct mycorrhizas were found, of which 14 were formed by identifiable fungi. The frequency of occurrence of the ‘E-strain’ fungus, the dominant nursery mycorrhizal fungus, decreases with the age of the outplanted seedling. Some mycorrhizal types were found in all the mature forest sites examined. The fungusT. terrestris was found on all age groups of Sitka spruce studied.

    Notes: Abstract Effects of low, medium, and high applications of solid, controlled-release fertilizers on ectomycorrhizal formation of containerized Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis (Bong.) Carr.) seedlings with a nursery or forest isolate of either Thelephora terrestris (Ehrh.) Fr., Laccaria laccata (Scop. ex Fr.) Cooke, or the “E-strain” fungus was evaluated 14 weeks after inoculation. The influence of fungal species and isolate source on seedling growth and nutrient status was also evaluated through an analysis of variance. Seedlings receiving the low level of fertilization were significantly smaller than those receiving the medium or high level. Fungal species and isolate source did not affect seedling size and was significant only for the percentage of short roots colonized which tended to be highest in the low fertilizer treatment. Analyses of foliage revealed that concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus did not differ significantly by fertilizer level or fungal type whereas potassium was significantly higher at the low level of fertilization and magnesium was significantly lower at the low level of fertilization.
