Description: Abstract Poor soil‐residue contact from field‐chopped straw (CS) application restricts the efficient incorporation and rapid decomposition of crop residues in intensive cropping systems. Pelletized straw (PS), which has a high bulk density and relatively small size, can improve this contact, but its effect on soil fertility after incorporation is not well known. Therefore, a field experiment was conducted over four cropping seasons in Shandong Province, China, to evaluate the effects of corn CS and PS incorporation (6 t/ha) on soil organic carbon (SOC), available nitrogen (N), available phosphorus (P), available potassium (K), crop yields and economic benefits. Compared with the SOC and available N, P and K concentrations from 0 to 60 cm under the no straw incorporation (CK) treatment, the concentrations under the CS and PS treatments were higher but decreased gradually after treatment application. In the topsoil (0–20 cm) under the CS and PS treatments, these concentrations increased by 1.6% and 10.0%, by 18.5% and 25.8%, by 21.7% and 29.3%, and by 9.2% and 13.0%, respectively. Compared with the soil fertility in the CS plots, soil fertility in the PS plots improved, but significant differences were recorded only in the first season. The highest crop yield each season was obtained from the PS plots: wheat yields were 8.8% and 10.3% higher in the PS plots than those in the CS and CK plots, respectively, and corn yields were 2.8% and 16.9% higher, respectively. Furthermore, the net economic return averaged across 2 yr was 7.8% and 23.9% greater with the PS treatment than that with the CS and CK treatments, respectively. Thus, PS may constitute an efficient and economical approach for improving soil fertility and increasing crop yields in intensive cropping systems.

Description: This study extends the linear spectral-element method (SEM) program SPECFEM3D to include nonlinear constitutive relationships. The iterations for solving the nonlinear equations are bypassed considering that the explicit integration used in the code requires a very small time increment; as a result, the high efficiency of the original linear procedure is preserved. This nonlinear code allows us to perform a deterministic seismic-hazard analysis that considers the nonlinear behaviors of the propagation path and local site for an engineering site. After checking its accuracy against the commercial finite-element method program ABAQUS, the extended nonlinear SEM is used to investigate the effect of noncausative faults on the seismic ground motion at the Dagangshan dam site in Southwest China. The analysis of the study case shows that the isolation effect of noncausative faults is dependent on the fault-source relative position, and the nonlinear responses of the faults are sensitive to earthquake magnitude.

Description: Currently, there exists only one set of experimental results at temperatures up to 680 K with the claimed relative standard uncertainty of (0.15–0.20)%. This paper reports new experimental results using the two-capillary viscometer in the temperature range from 298.15 K to 653.15 K with the claimed relative standard uncertainty of 0.062%. The new measurements agree with the existing high accuracy measurements and ab initio calculations in the overlapping temperature range within the extraordinary low relative differences of ±0.08%. The good agreement represents a robust proof of the potential models derived from the ab initio calculations, which play the powerful means in obtaining the thermophysical properties of dilute monoatomic gases over wide temperature ranges. In the experiments, the authors observed the occurrence of insufficient preheating existing with the two-capillary viscometer at high temperature.

Description: Hematological traits are important clinical indicators, the genetic determinants of which have not been fully investigated. Common measures of hematological traits include red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin concentration (HGB), hematocrit (HCT), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), MCH concentration (MCHC), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), platelet count (PLT) and white blood cell (WBC) count. We carried out a genome-wide association study of the eight common hematological traits among 7943 African-American children and 6234 Caucasian children. In African Americans, we report five novel associations of HBE1 variants with HCT and MCHC, the alpha-globin gene cluster variants with RBC and MCHC, and a variant at the ARHGEF3 locus with PLT, as well as replication of four previously reported loci at genome-wide significance. In Caucasians, we report a novel association of variants at the COPZ1 locus with PLT as well as replication of four previously reported loci at genome-wide significance. Extended analysis of an association observed between MCH and the alpha-globin gene cluster variants demonstrated independent effects and epistatic interaction at the locus, impacting the risk of iron deficiency anemia in African Americans with specific genotype states. In summary, we extend the understanding of genetic variants underlying hematological traits based on analyses in African-American children.

Description: Methyl-CpG binding protein 2 (MeCP2) has crucial roles in transcriptional regulation and microRNA processing. Mutations in the MECP2 gene are found in 90% of patients with Rett syndrome, a severe developmental disorder with autistic phenotypes. Duplications of MECP2-containing genomic segments cause the MECP2 duplication syndrome, which shares core symptoms with autism spectrum disorders. Although Mecp2-null mice recapitulate most developmental and behavioural defects seen in patients with Rett syndrome, it has been difficult to identify autism-like behaviours in the mouse model of MeCP2 overexpression. Here we report that lentivirus-based transgenic cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) expressing human MeCP2 in the brain exhibit autism-like behaviours and show germline transmission of the transgene. Expression of the MECP2 transgene was confirmed by western blotting and immunostaining of brain tissues of transgenic monkeys. Genomic integration sites of the transgenes were characterized by a deep-sequencing-based method. As compared to wild-type monkeys, MECP2 transgenic monkeys exhibited a higher frequency of repetitive circular locomotion and increased stress responses, as measured by the threat-related anxiety and defensive test. The transgenic monkeys showed less interaction with wild-type monkeys within the same group, and also a reduced interaction time when paired with other transgenic monkeys in social interaction tests. The cognitive functions of the transgenic monkeys were largely normal in the Wisconsin general test apparatus, although some showed signs of stereotypic cognitive behaviours. Notably, we succeeded in generating five F1 offspring of MECP2 transgenic monkeys by intracytoplasmic sperm injection with sperm from one F0 transgenic monkey, showing germline transmission and Mendelian segregation of several MECP2 transgenes in the F1 progeny. Moreover, F1 transgenic monkeys also showed reduced social interactions when tested in pairs, as compared to wild-type monkeys of similar age. Together, these results indicate the feasibility and reliability of using genetically engineered non-human primates to study brain disorders.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Liu, Zhen -- Li, Xiao -- Zhang, Jun-Tao -- Cai, Yi-Jun -- Cheng, Tian-Lin -- Cheng, Cheng -- Wang, Yan -- Zhang, Chen-Chen -- Nie, Yan-Hong -- Chen, Zhi-Fang -- Bian, Wen-Jie -- Zhang, Ling -- Xiao, Jianqiu -- Lu, Bin -- Zhang, Yue-Fang -- Zhang, Xiao-Di -- Sang, Xiao -- Wu, Jia-Jia -- Xu, Xiu -- Xiong, Zhi-Qi -- Zhang, Feng -- Yu, Xiang -- Gong, Neng -- Zhou, Wen-Hao -- Sun, Qiang -- Qiu, Zilong -- England -- Nature. 2016 Feb 4;530(7588):98-102. doi: 10.1038/nature16533.
