    Description: Madagascar hosts one of the world's most unusual, endemic, diverse and threatened concentrations of fauna. To explain its unique, imbalanced biological diversity, G. G. Simpson proposed the 'sweepstakes hypothesis', according to which the ancestors of Madagascar's present-day mammal stock rafted there from Africa. This is an important hypothesis in biogeography and evolutionary theory for how animals colonize new frontiers, but its validity is questioned. Studies suggest that currents were inconsistent with rafting to Madagascar and that land bridges provided the migrants' passage. Here we show that currents could have transported the animals to the island and highlight evidence inconsistent with the land-bridge hypothesis. Using palaeogeographic reconstructions and palaeo-oceanographic modelling, we find that strong surface currents flowed from northeast Mozambique and Tanzania eastward towards Madagascar during the Palaeogene period, exactly as required by the 'sweepstakes process'. Subsequently, Madagascar advanced north towards the equatorial gyre and the regional current system evolved into its modern configuration with flows westward from Madagascar to Africa. This may explain why no fully non-aquatic land mammals have colonized Madagascar since the arrival of the rodents and carnivorans during the early-Miocene epoch.     Description: The 260-million-year-old Emeishan volcanic province of southwest China overlies and is interbedded with Middle Permian carbonates that contain a record of the Guadalupian mass extinction. Sections in the region thus provide an opportunity to directly monitor the relative timing of extinction and volcanism within the same locations. These show that the onset of volcanism was marked by both large phreatomagmatic eruptions and extinctions amongst fusulinacean foraminifers and calcareous algae. The temporal coincidence of these two phenomena supports the idea of a cause-and-effect relationship.     Description: How, when, and from where Madagascar's vertebrates arrived on the island is poorly known, and a comprehensive explanation for the distribution of its organisms has yet to emerge. We begin to break that impasse by analyzing vertebrate arrival patterns implied by currently existing taxa. For each of 81 clades, we compiled arrival date, source, and ancestor type (obligate freshwater, terrestrial, facultative swimmer, or volant). We analyzed changes in arrival rates, with and without adjusting for clade extinction. Probability of successful transoceanic dispersal is negatively correlated with distance traveled and influenced by ocean currents and ancestor type. Obligate rafters show a decrease in probability of successful transoceanic dispersal from the Paleocene onward, reaching the lowest levels after the mid-Miocene. This finding is consistent with a paleoceanographic model [Ali JR, Huber M (2010) Nature 463:653–656] that predicts Early Cenozoic surface currents periodically conducive to rafting or swimming from Africa, followed by a reconfiguration to present-day flow 15–20 million years ago that significantly diminished the ability for transoceanic dispersal to Madagascar from the adjacent mainland.

    Description: Redbeds are an important source of palaeomagnetic data, but they often record inclinations shallower than that of the ancient local geomagnetic field. Discrepancy of palaeopoles from Cretaceous redbeds in South China Block (SCB) and the coeval Eurasia reference pole is commonly attributed to inclination shallowing. However, redbed-derived palaeomagnetic data from the block have rarely been critically assessed with data from coeval volcanic rocks that should be unaffected by the problem. Here, we address the issue using high-quality palaeomagnetic data from Upper Cretaceous (~95 Ma) amygdaloidal basalts and coeval redbeds from Jiangshan, Zhejiang Province and Guangfeng, Jiangxi Province. Stepwise thermal and alternating field demagnetizations isolated stable components that in the basalts are carried by a mixture of magnetite and titanomagntite and in the sedimentary units by haematite. The stable components are regarded as primary based on positive intraformational conglomerate tests and a regional tilt test. The redbeds yield a tilt corrected mean direction of D  = 20.9°, I  = 35.8°, α 95  = 8.7°, N  = 6, which is statistically indistinguishable from the mean direction of the basalts ( D  = 17.6°, I  = 38.1°, α 95  = 8.6°, N  = 11), suggesting that the former do not suffer from the problem. In addition, analysis of the other Late Cretaceous SCB palaeopoles reveals two groups with one at relatively high (‘H’, ~80°N) latitudes and the other at relatively low (‘L’, ~70°N) latitudes. Importantly, each comprises palaeopoles from both redbeds and volcanic rocks, and reasonable consistency exists within each group, further attesting that SCB redbeds do not suffer significant inclination shallowing. Comparison of the SCB palaeopoles with a newly defined coeval reference pole for Europe indicates an ~11° separation. Since inclination shallowing, over 1000 km tectonic shortening, and apparent polar wander appear unlikely, the ~11° discrepancy may provide evidence for the non-rigidity of the Eurasia plate. Consequently, a new Late Cretaceous reference pole for the stable SCB is defined at 72.3°N, 235.2°E, where A 95  = 3.2° and N  = 6.

    Description: A palaeomagnetic investigation was carried out on a series of rift basalts (Woniusi Formation) that accumulated on the Baoshan block (SW China) in the Early Permian, the aim being to provide quantitative palaeogeographical information on the eastern Cimmerian terrane as it detached from eastern Gondwana. Reliable data were obtained from four locations/28 individual cooling units, and when combined with the findings of an earlier study (three locations/19 sites) indicate that breakup occurred at 41.9°S (with errors, 34.2–51.2°S). Using this information, we fit Baoshan against Gondwana within a narrow longitudinal belt close to where northeast Greater India and northwest Australia were once in close proximity. Furthermore, we suggest that Sibumasu (Simao-Burma-Malyasia-Sumatra; the largest of the eastern Cimmerian blocks) lay directly to the east, offshore of Australia; Qiangtang and Lhasa almost certainly sat to the west (off northern Greater India–SE Arabia), but we are uncertain as to their exact configuration. Our findings are compared with several rather different models that have been published in recent years. The new palaeomagnetic constraint highlights the flexibility authors currently have in reconstructing the region, principally because of the overall lack of similar high-quality data from the various blocks. We explain how new data could resolve these ambiguities, thereby offering more robust explanations for eastern Gondwana's late Palaeozoic development.
