    Notes: Abstract Diffusion bonds have been produced between sheets of an Al-Li-Cu-Mg-Zr alloy using aluminium-4% copper vapour deposited metallic interlayers. Microstructural changes occurred both in the parent alloy and in the bond interface after diffusion bonding cycles and post-bonding heat treatments were analysed. Different metallographic techniques (light microscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy) have been used. Diffusion bonding trials were carried out using the same alloy (AA8090), both in non-superplastic (T6) and superplastic conditions. Differences in their behaviours in relation to diffusion bonding were observed.

    Notes: Abstract Diffusion bonds between alumina and high-strength aluminium alloy (AA-7075) have been produced and studied in the present work. Direct diffusion bonding in the solid state was tested as a possible joining method for both materials. The nature of the AA7075-Al2O3 interface was investigated paying special attention to the chemical interaction processes between the alloying elements and the ceramic material, as well as their influence on the joint strength. SEM images and energy-dispersive microanalysis were used to determine the formation of reaction layer between both parent materials. Shear strength was used as an optimum method to evaluate the bond strength and the influence of the bonding parameters on it. A maximum shear strength of 60 MPa was achieved using bonding temperatures and pressures of 360 °C and 6 MPa, respectively, during very prolonged bonding times (100h). Fractographic studies of the failure surface gave additional information on those aspects.

    Notes: Abstract The microstructure transformations produced during the diffusion bonding of grey cast iron to pure iron (ARMCO iron) and to a hypoeutectic steel (0.55% C) have been studied. The indirect determination of the carbon concentration profiles has produced a diffusion equation that relates the microstructure of the bond interface to the bonding temperature and time. A new tensile test specimen is described; this specimen has a variable circular section which allows the determination of true tensile strength of dissimilar diffusion bonds. Metallographic and fractographic studies have shown that the optimum bonding conditions for both types of joint are a bonding temperature at 980° C, for 5 min at a bonding pressure of 4.5 MPa.

Thin foils of a soft metal (copper) were used to reduce the effects of the residual stresses produced in the joint by thermal expansion mismatch. The strength of the joint was found to be influenced by the bonding parameters, but principally by the oxygen content both on the surface and in the copper matrix. The diffusion bonds have been mechanically tested using a three-point bending test. Maximum bending strengths of 100 MPa were achieved by using a 0.1 mm copper foil, and bonding in a oxidizing atmosphere (P O 2=104Pa). SEM and EDS investigations have shown the presence of reaction products in the copper-alumina interface which controls the mechanical properties of the joint.

    Notes: Hot-melt pressure-sensitive adhesives based on styrene-butadiene block copolymers with aliphatic and aromatic tackifying resins and plastifying oils have been analyzed. The importance of the resin structure in the compatibility with the block copolymer and the influence of the different paraffinic-naphthenic character of the oil in PSA performance have been shown. Ternary systems with a fixed polymer content (30%) and with variable resin and oil contents show a good miscibility over the whole range of compositions, and only one glass transition temperature was found in each composition. The relationship between chemical composition and bulk performance are expressed in terms of the visco-elastic behavior of the adhesives, measured by DMTA. It has been shown that at a given resin content there is a minimum on tan δ peak vs. temperature, the melt viscosities present a plateau region and the tack strength shows a maximum. An important conclusion is that phase separation is not a requirement for maximum tack; some restricted miscibility is enough, present in a few microdomains of the blend. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

    Notes: With the study of three specific molecules, Na3(C2E″), HCN(X1Σ+), and O3(D1B2), each showing a distinctly different dynamical behavior at the energies studied, we show how techniques of nonlinear classical mechanics can be applied to simulate low resolution vibrational spectra and to extract the underlying dynamics from them. Particularly the importance of the single unstable periodic orbits in the chaotic regions of phase space is demonstrated.

    Description: We investigate the spatio-temporal complexity of moment release of the February 21, 1996 Peru earthquake (Mw7.5). We use a non-linear source tomographic technique, based on simulated annealing, to invert surface wave source spectra for the slip distribution on a gently dipping fault plane. The spectra (5-65 mHz) are obtained using an empirical Green's function (EGF) method applied to first and second orbit fundamental mode Rayleigh waves. Spectra are well fit by a 110 km bilateral rupture, subparallel to the trench, updip of the hypocenter, with a total moment of 2.0?1020 Nm. The non-linear inversion reveals a 30x30 km 2 major slip patch south the onset, where rupture velocities attain 1.5-2.0 km/s. Inversions of teleseismic broadband P and SH waves (10-500 mHz) indicate little or no directivity, consistent with the surface wave data. The average source time functions for both the surface and body wave data are similar in shape and in duration (?50 s). Part of the slip during the 1996 Peru event occurred in a region of reduced background seismicity, as was the case for the 1992 Nicaragua slow event, suggesting that the seismogenic potential of low seismicity regions near the trench should be globally reassessed
