Description:
Adam and Vidal (Reports, 2 April 2010, p. 83) reported sea-floor depth increasing as the square root of distance from the ridge along "mantle flow lines." However, their data actually support a depth-age relationship and "flattening" at older ages. We argue that no plausible physical mechanism supports their proposal that mantle flow drives subsidence.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Croon, Marcel B -- Hillier, John K -- Sclater, John G -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2011 Feb 25;331(6020):1011; author reply 1011. doi: 10.1126/science.1193587.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Author address: 〈/span〉Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, 9500 Gilman Drive, San Diego, CA 92093-0220, USA. mcroon@ucsd.edu〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Record origin:〈/span〉 〈a href="http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21350152" target="_blank"〉PubMed〈/a〉
