    Description: Conservation scientists, national governments, and international conservation groups seek to devise, and implement, governance strategies that mitigate human impact on the environment. However, few studies to date have systematically investigated the performance of different systems of governance in achieving successful conservation outcomes. Here, we use a newly-developed analytic framework to conduct analyses of a suite of case studies, linking different governance strategies to standardized scores for delivering ecosystem services, achieving sustainable use of natural resources, and conserving biodiversity, at both local and international levels. Our results: (i) confirm the benefits of adaptive management; and (ii) reveal strong associations for the role of leadership. Our work provides a critical step toward implementing empirically justified governance strategies that are capable of improving the management of human-altered environments, with benefits for both biodiversity and people.

    Description: Motivation: Most anatomical ontologies are species-specific, whereas a framework for comparative studies is needed. We describe the vertebrate Homologous Organs Groups ontology, vHOG, used to compare expression patterns between species. Results: vHOG is a multispecies anatomical ontology for the vertebrate lineage. It is based on the HOGs used in the Bgee database of gene expression evolution. vHOG version 1.4 includes 1184 terms, follows OBO principles and is based on the Common Anatomy Reference Ontology (CARO). vHOG only describes structures with historical homology relations between model vertebrate species. The mapping to species-specific anatomical ontologies is provided as a separate file, so that no homology hypothesis is stated within the ontology itself. Each mapping has been manually reviewed, and we provide support codes and references when available.     Description: Neurons in the torus semicircularis of the weakly electric fish Eigenmannia encode phase differences between sinusoidal electrical stimuli received in different body regions. These fish normally experience time-varying phase differences when the electric organ discharge fields of two or more individuals overlap.     Description: Laboratory landslide experiments enable the observation of specific properties of these natural hazards. However, these observations are limited by traditional techniques: frequently used high-speed video analysis and wired sensors (e.g. displacement). These techniques lead to the drawback that either only the surface and 2D profiles can be observed or wires confine the motion behaviour. In contrast, an unconfined observation of the total spatiotemporal dynamics of landslides is needed for an adequate understanding of these natural hazards. The present study introduces an autonomous and wireless probe to characterize motion features of single clasts within laboratory-scale landslides. The Smartstone probe is based on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and records acceleration and rotation at a sampling rate of 100 Hz. The recording ranges are ±16 g (accelerometer) and ±2000∘ s−1 (gyroscope). The plastic tube housing is 55 mm long with a diameter of 10 mm. The probe is controlled, and data are read out via active radio frequency identification (active RFID) technology. Due to this technique, the probe works under low-power conditions, enabling the use of small button cell batteries and minimizing its size. Using the Smartstone probe, the motion of single clasts (gravel size, median particle diameter d50 of 42 mm) within approx. 520 kg of a uniformly graded pebble material was observed in a laboratory experiment. Single pebbles were equipped with probes and placed embedded and superficially in or on the material. In a first analysis step, the data of one pebble are interpreted qualitatively, allowing for the determination of different transport modes, such as translation, rotation and saltation. In a second step, the motion is quantified by means of derived movement characteristics: the analysed pebble moves mainly in the vertical direction during the first motion phase with a maximal vertical velocity of approx. 1.7 m s−1. A strong acceleration peak of approx. 36 m s−2 is interpreted as a pronounced hit and leads to a complex rotational-motion pattern. In a third step, displacement is derived and amounts to approx. 1.0 m in the vertical direction. The deviation compared to laser distance measurements was approx. −10 %. Furthermore, a full 3D spatiotemporal trajectory of the pebble is reconstructed and visualized supporting the interpretations. Finally, it is demonstrated that multiple pebbles can be analysed simultaneously within one experiment. Compared to other observation methods Smartstone probes allow for the quantification of internal movement characteristics and, consequently, a motion sampling in landslide experiments.

    Notes: Abstract Recordings within the posterior eminentia granularis of the weakly electric fish, Apteronotus leptorhynchus, revealed multiple types of proprioceptive units responsive to changes in the position of the animal's trunk and tail. Intracellular labelling showed that the proprioceptor recordings were made from axons that ramify extensively within the EGp. The location of the somata giving rise to these axons is presently unknown. Electroreceptor afferent responses to electric organ discharge amplitude modulations caused by movement of the animal's tail were compared to responses caused by electronically generated AMs of similar amplitude and time course. These did not differ. Electrosensory lateral line lobe pyramidal cells responded significantly less to electric organ discharge amplitude modulations caused by changing the animal's posture as compared to electronically produced AMs, suggesting that central mechanisms attenuate pyramidal cell responses to reafferent electrosensory inputs. Experiments in which the pattern of reafferent input associated with changes in posture was altered revealed that the pyramidal cells learn, over a time course of several minutes, to reject new patterns of input. Both proprioceptive input and descending electrosensory input to the posterior eminentia granularis are involved in generating the observed plastic changes in pyramidal cell responsiveness.

    Notes: Abstract The roles of amino acid neurotransmitters in determining the processing characteristics of the electrosensory lateral line lobe (ELL) in Apteronotus leptorhynchus were investigated by studying the responses of ELL output neurons to pressure ejection of various neurotransmitter agonists and antagonists alone and in combination with simple electrosensory stimuli. 1. Pressure ejection of L-glutamate into the ELL dorsal molecular layer caused either excitation or inhibition of ELL efferent neurons (pyramidal cells). The sign of these responses reversed with changes in the position of the pressure pipette. Histological verification of drug ejection sites relative to recorded cells and diffusion estimates indicate that excitatory and inhibitory responses result from glutamate activation of pyramidal cells and of inhibitory interneurons, respectively. 2. ELL output cells respond to both NMDA and non-NMDA glutamate agonists and the responses are attenuated by co-ejection of specific antagonists indicating that both AMPA/kainate and NMDA receptors exist on pyramidal cell apical dendrites. 3. Gamma-aminobutyric acid inhibits basilar and nonbasilar pyramidal cells when ejected near their apical dendrites and disinhibits them when ejected near surrounding inhibitory interneurons confirming the presence of GABA receptors on these cell types. 4. An NMDA antagonist did not alter pyramidal cell responses to electrosensory stimuli but a non-NMDA antagonist altered both responses to the stimuli and firing frequency shortly following stimulus cessation.
