Description: The mammalian innate immune system is activated by foreign nucleic acids. Detection of double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) in the cytoplasm triggers characteristic antiviral responses and macrophage cell death. Cytoplasmic dsDNA rapidly activated caspase 3 and caspase 1 in bone marrow-derived macrophages. We identified the HIN-200 family member and candidate lupus susceptibility factor, p202, as a dsDNA binding protein that bound stably and rapidly to transfected DNA. Knockdown studies showed p202 to be an inhibitor of DNA-induced caspase activation. Conversely, the related pyrin domain-containing HIN-200 factor, AIM2 (p210), was required for caspase activation by cytoplasmic dsDNA. This work indicates that HIN-200 proteins can act as pattern recognition receptors mediating responses to cytoplasmic dsDNA.〈br /〉〈span class="detail_caption"〉Notes: 〈/span〉Roberts, Tara L -- Idris, Adi -- Dunn, Jasmyn A -- Kelly, Greg M -- Burnton, Carol M -- Hodgson, Samantha -- Hardy, Lani L -- Garceau, Valerie -- Sweet, Matthew J -- Ross, Ian L -- Hume, David A -- Stacey, Katryn J -- New York, N.Y. -- Science. 2009 Feb 20;323(5917):1057-60. doi: 10.1126/science.1169841. Notes: At Wellesbourne, Warwick, in 1968, not all plants of the lettuce cv. Webb's Wonderful protected against lettuce root aphid. Pemphigus bursarius (L.), by diazinon pre-sowing treatments remained uncolonized throughout a relatively light aphid attack but no colonization of unprotected plants of cv. Avoncrisp occurred. In a second experiment in 1972, in which plants were untreated and exposed to an intense aphid attack, the lettuce cvs. Mildura, Borough Wonder, Webb's Wonderful, Avoncrisp and Avondefiance all attracted similar large numbers of winged root aphid rnigrants. No root colonies formed on the resistant CVS. Avoncrisp and Avondefiance. All plants of the other cultivars became severely damaged and most were killed.

Notes: [Auszug] The plot was planted in 1956 and has since received four spray applications of g-BHC each year, the initial spray of 4 oz. a.i. and all subsequent sprays of 12 oz. a.i. per acre applied in 5 gallons of water by portable, motorized mistblowers. In August 1961 it became apparent that the capsid ...

Notes: Abstract The progeny of one viviparous aptera from a strain of Myzus persicae which appeared to have become resistant to organophosphorus insecticides, were bred asexually in an environment free from these materials. At approximately the 7th generation, the clone when compared with a susceptible strain had a 25-fold resistance to demeton-methyl. With subsequent generations the resistance gradually declined and within 30 generations from its establishment the clone was no longer resistant.

Notes: Summary BHC-resistance in the cocoa capsid,Distantiella theobroma, in Ghana was confirmed, and cross resistance found to extend to six other chlorinated hydrocarbons including Thiodan. There was no cross resistance to DDT, Sevin or to the organophosphorus compounds tested.

Notes: Summary Many lettuce cultivars (Lactuca sativa L.) with high resistance to lettuce root aphid (Pemphigus bursarius L.) also carried the gene Dm-6 for specific resistance to downy mildew (Bremia lactucae Regel). This suggests the possibility of linkage between this gene and root aphid resistance. The origin of this association is discussed.

Notes: Summary An electron microscopical study was made of the coeloconic and placoid sensilla on the antennae of the aphids Aphis pomi, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, Nasonovia ribis-nigri, and Pemphigus bursarius. Scanning electron microscopy revealed some variation in morphology which may be functionally important but is more likely to reflect the evolution of these species. The placoid sensilla were shown by transmission electron microscopy to have the same basic structural pattern. Each group of two or three neurons is surrounded by two ensheathing cells. The ciliary regions of the dendrites pass through a vacuole into a cavity between an outer and an inner cuticle where they may be connected to the dendritic branches although such connections were not seen. Small pores (8 nm diameter) partially penetrate the cuticle implying that these sensilla have an olfactory function. They are suggested to be important in host selection by alate aphids. The coeloconic sensilla are poreless pegs with nonsensory cuticular projections at their tips. The distal portions of their dendrites contain densely packed microtubules and the cellular arrangement of the sensilla is similar to that of the placoid sensilla. It is suggested that they may function as thermoreceptors.
