Description / Table of Contents: Further Knowledge of Chlorophyll and of Hemin, XXXII. Partial Synthesis of Rhodin-g7-trimethyl Ester from Chlorin-e6-trimethyl Ester and at the Same Time Completion of the Harvard Synthesis of Chlorophyll a to Chlorophyll bThe mechanism of the photochemical oxidation of chlorin-β-phlorins is demonstrated: 2 → [I → II] → 3a + 3b. The bacterio-3,4-diol-3-monomethyl ethers 3a - 3b, finally formed through methanolysis, render possible a proton catalyzed functionalisation of the 4-ethyl group: 3a + 3b → [III] → 4. The 4′-hydroxy compound 4 formed is oxidized finally to the deethyl-4-acetyl-chlorin (5). - This „model“ reaction sequence is extended to a functionalisation of the 3-methyl group also, by using the bacterio-3,4-diols 6a + 6b, obtained through hydrolysis after photochemical oxidation of 2, instead of 3a + 3b; this gives two theoretically equal leaving groups. Through protonolysis from 6a + 6b are formed the 3-hydroxymethyl-(7) as well as the 4′-hydroxy-chlorin (9), which can be separated. Oxidation of the rhodinol (7) leads to rhodin-g7-trimethyl ester, identical with natural material. - 9 is dehydrated to 4-vinyl-chlorin-trimethyl ester (10), a possible intermediate of the biosynthesis of chlorophyll a.

Notes: The γ-irradiation-induced polymerization of N,N-dimethylethenesulfonamide, m.p. -3 to -2°C., has been studied in the liquid, supercooled liquid, and solid states from -50 to +42°C. The polymerization is relatively slow (0.8%/hr.) at 0.13 Mr/hr. and is inhibited in the solid state. The activation energy (-16°C. super-cooled liquid to 42°C.), -2.4 kcal./mole, indicates an ionic process. The radical-initiated (peroxide, azobisisobutyronitrile, ultraviolet) polymerization gives low molecular weight products. The marked decrease in rate for the N,N-dimethyl derivative as compared to that for ethenesulfonamide itself is attributed to an increased irradiation instability associated with N-methyl structures which parallels that for amides and N-methylamides in carbon tetrachloride.

Description: After considerable improvements of wastewater treatment, the loads of nutrients and plant protection agents, deriving from agriculture and heavy metals from urban drainages effluents as well as from erosion of agricultural soils are the main sources of nutrients and harmful substances in the loads of water bodies. The targets of the project were on the one hand the analysis of the political and legislative framework of both policy fields and on the other hand the evaluation of several, selected water protection measures with regard to their contribution to reduce water pollution, their economical effects as well as their political enforceability. The focus was laid on diffuse water pollution caused by agriculture. As main reasons for the diffuse water pollution stagnating at high level, the analysis of the political framework identified a lack of implementation discipline of water law, followed by the fragmented and insufficient water protection legislation itself and the previous design of the common agricultural policy slanted towards increasing productivity. For the future co-operation of agricultural and water authorities in implementation of their reforms and better definition of "Good Farming Practice" are recommended. The second investigation level focuses on the analysis and assessment of selected measures to reduce the input of nutrients and plant protection agents. This part was done with help of calculation models focussing on the specific cost/benefit ratios for water protection. In detail the following measures have been analysed: decoupling of direct payments, coupling of livestock farming to areas, tax on mineral nitrogen, pesticide levy, buffer stripes alongside of watercourses, all season crop cover on arable land, soil cultivation procedures, changing the use of arable land, optimisation of animal nutrition, optimisation of manure storage and application, co-operative agreements, education and training. Co-operations and water protection related education and training can be highly recommended, since they improve knowledge and freedom of action. As the results on county level show, the measure "Decoupling of direct payments" would not lead to appreciable changes as far as the nutrient surpluses on farmland is concerned. "Coupling livestock farming to areas" would decrease the surpluses substantially. For this measure and Tax on mineral nitrogen, varying adaptation reactions could be expected depending on the regional specialisation in cropping or livestock farming areas. On single farm level the measures, protein adapted feeding, optimisation of manure storage and application showed the best cost-efficiency to reduce nutrient surpluses. All season crop cover on arable land and conservation tillage are highly efficient, too, and should be included in farming practice. A stronger limitation of livestock density could mean a reduction of manure, but the implementation of this measure would lead to high losses of income for farmers specialised in animal production. For reduction of diffuse water pollution caused by urban drainage political approaches as well as detailed technical measures are examined. In the area of urban drainage storm water management (especially infiltration and constructed wetlands), unsealing of paved areas and small wastewater treatment structures (for phosphorus reduction) showed best cost-effectiveness.

Description: Amber is an organic multicompound derivative from the polymerization of resin of diverse higher plants. Compared with other modes of fossil preservation, amber records the anatomy of and ecological interactions between ancient soft-bodied organisms with exceptional fidelity. However, it is currently suggested that ambers do not accurately record the composition of arthropod forest paleocommunities, due to crucial taphonomic biases. We evaluated the effects of taphonomic processes on arthropod entrapment by resin from the plantHymenaea, one of the most important resin-producing trees and a producer of tropical Cenozoic ambers and Anthropocene (or subfossil) resins. We statistically compared natural entrapment byHymenaea verrucosatree resin with the ensemble of arthropods trapped by standardized entomological traps around the same tree species. Our results demonstrate that assemblages in resin are more similar to those from sticky traps than from malaise traps, providing an accurate representation of the arthropod fauna living in or near the resiniferous tree, but not of entire arthropod forest communities. Particularly, arthropod groups such as Lepidoptera, Collembola, and some Diptera are underrepresented in resins. However, resin assemblages differed slightly from sticky traps, perhaps because chemical compounds in the resins attract or repel specific insect groups. Ground-dwelling or flying arthropods that use the tree-trunk habitat for feeding or reproduction are also well represented in the resin assemblages, implying that fossil inclusions in amber can reveal fundamental information about biology of the past. These biases have implications for the paleoecological interpretation of the fossil record, principally of Cenozoic amber with angiosperm origin.
