Notes: Abstract Generalized fin-lines are analyzed which consist of slots located on more than one interface between dielectric layers inserted in parallel with the E-plane of a waveguide. The analysis is based on a simplified formulation technique based on the spectral domain immittance matrix followed by a Galerkin's method. It allows as many slots as one desires at each interface, and the locations and the widths of these slots are arbitrary. The numerical process to carry out the present analysis is rather efficient. Some numerical data, including propagation constants of the propagating modes as well as characteristic impedances are presented for several structures considered useful for millimeter-wave circuit applications.

Notes: Abstract Open dielectric waveguides with a gyrotropic layer have been studied with a view to find structures in which the nonreciprocity in the propagation constant is maximized. A prediction based on a qualitative analysis and numerical studies for confirming the theory are included.

Notes: Abstract A new distributed millimeter-wave isolator is proposed. This device employs a nonreciprocal coupling mechanism between a dielectric slab and a conductor-backed ferrite slab. Transverse resonance and mode matching techniques are used for analysis. A numerically optimized structure at 200 GHz will be discussed and experimental results at 35 GHz will be presented.

Notes: Abstract This paper reviews some of the recent efforts in the area of microwave–optical interactions applied to active integrated antennas and arrays. Two optical–microwave techniques and examples of their application are presented. First, antenna remoting via optical means is discussed. Second, optical control of microwave devices in active antenna circuits is demonstrated.

Notes: The Boltzmann transport equation is used to derive a set of conservation equations which is capable of describing the electron transport phenomena in a single-valley semiconductor. These conservation equations are averaged over the different valleys of the conduction band to develop another set of equations that can be used to describe accurately the electron transport phenomena in a multi-valley semiconductor, such as GaAs, using the equivalent single-electron gas model whose characteristics are the average weighted characteristics of the constituent gases. The nonstationary effects are included by using energy dependent mobility and electron temperature functions. This program is used to simulate a GaAs MESFET with a 0·5 μm gate length and a 0.2 μm thick active layer. The active layer is doped at 1017 cm-3. A travelling Gunn domain is observed between the gate and the drain. The domain oscillation frequency is much higher than the normal operating frequency of the MESFET. The domain formation's dependence on the gate bias and the active layer thickness are also presented.

Notes: A new time-domain approach based on the frequency-domain transverse resonance method is proposed to solve guided wave problems. This new method is capable of solving both the two-dimensional and the three-dimensional propagation problems. The structure under investigation is cut into individual substructures. Time-domain Green's functions of each substructure are computed via the analytical inverse Laplace transform of the frequency-domain Green's functions. The original problem is reconstructed by connecting the cut-out substructures together through the interface boundary conditions. In order to verify the present approach, the empty rectangular waveguide is used as a comparison. With accurately calculated time-domain Green's functions, the data obtained are in good agreement with the analytical results.
