    Notes: Light- and electron-microscopic observations of the chemosensory areas of the arteries of the tortoise (Testudo hermanni) reveal that clusters of nonmuscular cells are found in the adventitial layer of restricted regions of the carotid artery, aortic arch, and pulmonary artery. In these clusters, three types of cells are complexly interwoven: the G-cell closely resembles the glomus cell, which has been found in the arterial chemoreceptor area of several animal species; the LG-cell has very large electron-dense granules; the third type is a G- and LG-cell supporting cell. Membrane specializations are often observed at apposing membranes between G-cells. Two kinds of nerve endings synapse with G-cells, one with numerous clear synaptic vesicles, the other without vesicles. Some G-cells are in membrane-to-membrane contact with smooth-muscle cells (g-s connection), and here a membrane thickening is visible. Nerve terminals with numerous synaptic vesicles synapse with the LG-cells. The G-cell in the carotid artery, the aorta, and the pulmonary artery is a chemoreceptor element ultrastructurally the same as the glomus cell in the arterial chemoreceptor area of various vertebrate species.

    Notes: Several experiments were performed to elucidate the origin of the second-order optical nonlinearity χ(2) induced in the corona-poled Corning 7059 glass films. The values and the time decay of the second-harmonic coefficient d33 were measured for the glass films poled on several different kinds of substrates. The value of d33 was found to be dependent on the kinds of substrates. It was also observed that the glass films poled on a soda-lime substrate showed faster time decay of d33 than those poled on a Pyrex glass substrate. The glass films were also poled at room temperature, and the values of d33 were measured as a function of poling time. As a result, the value of d33 increased with the poling time and approached a value which was close to that obtained for the glass films poled at 100 °C. From the experimental results, it is speculated that the space charge formed in the vicinity of the interface between the glass film and the substrate contributes to the creation of the χ(2). The planar charge density at the glass-film–substrate interface is derived, and the experimental results are discussed.

    Notes: The improvement of potential confinement was attained in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985); Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Plasma Physics and Controlled Nuclear Fusion Research, Washington, 1990 (International Atomic Energy Agency, Vienna, 1991), Vol. 2, p. 539] by axisymmetrization of heating systems for the plasma production, heating, and potential formation. A significant increase of the density and diamagnetism by the potential confinement was observed. In the previous experiment, it was difficult to increase the central cell density higher than 2.7×1018 m−3. One of the possible mechanisms is the density clamping due to the eigenmode formation of the ion–cyclotron-range of frequency (ICRF) waves in the axial direction. With high harmonic ICRF waves (RF3), the experiments to overcome this problem have been performed. In preliminary experiments with RF3 and NBI the maximum density of 4×1018 m−3 was attained. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Ion distributions in a loss cone are measured in the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)]. When Alfvén ion cyclotron (AIC) modes are excited in the central cell, enhanced end-loss of ions is observed for a characteristic energy region which agrees well with the resonant ion cyclotron condition with the AIC wave. From measurements of pitch angle distributions of end-loss ions, it is found that the loss cone is filled for this characteristic energy region, indicating an ion diffusion in a velocity space induced by the AIC wave. Magnitude of the observed additional end-loss increases with increase in the amplitude of the AIC modes. In the present experimental parameters in GAMMA 10, the AIC wave effect on the axial ion confinement is not serious. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The formation of plug potential is usually observed in a tandem mirror experiment without neutral beam injection in the plug region [Phys. Plasmas 2, 2321 (1995)]. The formation requires only the electron cyclotron resonance heating experimentally. In this Letter the plug potential is analytically shown to be created in a tandem mirror with passing ions, mirror trapped ions in the thermal barrier, passing electrons and φ-trapped electrons in a plug potential but without high energy sloshing ions. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A formation mechanism of the plug potential in a tandem mirror is proposed. The orbits for ions, which are accelerated by the thermal barrier potential, are calculated numerically in a magnetic mirror field. A non-Maxwellian electron distribution function, which leads to a modified Boltzmann law, is assumed in order to determine the electrostatic potential profile. Monte Carlo simulation is carried out for ion dynamics to include the effects of Coulomb collisions and ion radial losses. It is found that the plug potential is formed under the condition that the ions trapped in the thermal barrier region are few. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The plug potential is formed experimentally, even without high energy sloshing ion population in the end-mirror cells of a tandem mirror. It has been shown analytically that the plug potential can be formed in the present experimental conditions by using the plausible distribution functions of ions and electrons and a small ionization source. In this paper, the required ionization rate is estimated for the continuous potential profile around the plug by using Emmert's source. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Neutron diagnostics are applied to a deuterium plasma mixed with protons in the central cell of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Inutake et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)]. The deuterium ions are heated with a slow ion cyclotron wave tuned to the fundamental deuterium resonance near the mid-plane of the central cell while the plasma is sustained with the fundamental resonance heating of protons in the minimum-B anchor cells. The measurement is based on in situ calibration to determine the transmission efficiency through machine walls and the counting efficiency of the detection system for neutrons emitted from 252Cf with energy close to that in the deuterium–deuterium (D–D) fusion reaction. The observation shows that the count rate of neutrons increases with diamagnetism, and this relation is accounted for in terms of fusion reaction between deuterium ions with a transverse temperature exceeding 10 keV. Discrepancies among ion temperatures determined with different diagnostics are mostly attributed to insufficient knowledge of the profiles of plasma parameters. The results indicate that the neutron measurement can be added as a powerful diagnostic tool for hot ions if combined with more detailed profile measurements. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The Fraunhofer diffraction measurements from a tandem mirror plasma are reported. The successful use of a new multichannel detector array permits a detailed study of k−ω spectra of long-wavelength waves with a few plasma shots. The observed dispersion relations are in good agreement with those of drift wave including a Doppler shift due to E×B rotation velocity.

    Notes: Features of the electrostatic energy analyzer of a cylindrical type are described with the aim of measuring the end-loss ions in the tandem mirror GAMMA 10. The analyzer provides us with information about ion density distributions in a loss-cone region of velocity space as well as plug potential in the tandem mirror. Application of the analyzer to the tandem mirror experiments and the energy spectrum analysis are discussed.
