Notes: Abstract. Corticosteroid-induced osteoporosis (CIO) is a serious disorder that results in significant long-term morbidity. Increased bone resorption is caused by decreased Ca absorption and increased urinary Ca excretion leading to secondary hyperparathyroidsim. Calcium prophylaxis alone, when patients start corticosteroids, is associated with rapid rates of spinal bone loss and offers only partial protection from corticosteroid-induced spinal bone loss. Though calcium supplementation may have some benefit, it clearly cannot completely prevent corticosteroid-induced bone loss. At most, Ca therapy should only be considered adjunctive therapy in the treatment or prevention of corticosteroid-induced bone loss and should be administered in combination with other treatments. Earlier work demonstrated increases in forearm bone mineral density (BMD) with the use of Ca and vitamin D in patients with established CIO. However, caution should be taken when interpreting these results, since bone loss generally tapers or plateaus after the first 12 months of corticosteroid treatment; as such, any therapy might show benefit. In addition, bone density was only taken at the radius and not the spine where most of the bone loss takes place. Nonetheless, in recent trials of at least 2-year duration in which calcium and vitamin D therapy served as placebos, the result indicated that bone mass was maintained at the spine and hip throughout treatment in patients who had used chronic corticosteroids. In primary prevention trials, the amount of bone loss observed in the spine after therapy with Ca and vitamin D combinations is similar to that observed in other prevention studies in the Ca alone-treated control groups. Furthermore, Ca and vitamin D therapy appears to be less effective than other agents in the prevention of corticosteroid-induce bone loss. Although several studies do not report side effects that may be associated with Ca and vitamin D therapy, the few that do frequently report hypercalciuria. In the absence of other studies that support the use of Ca and vitamin D in the prevention of CIO, the data are too limited to generally recommend them alone as a preventative therapy. Activated vitamin D may be of greater benefit.

Notes: Summary The nonlinear lateral buckling response of perfect stocky beams in the vicinity of the critical bifurcational state is discussed. Attention is focused on the initial post-buckling response. This depends on the nature of the critical branching point which is explored by using a nonlinear (lateral) bending-curvature relationship. It is found that the plane of loading (associated with the major moment of inertia) looses its stability through a stable symmetric bifurcation point. Hence, the above beams are not sensitive to imperfections, exhibiting post-buckling strength. However, the post-buckling equilibrium path is quite shallow, so that the load-carrying capacity of such beams above the critical state is rather limited. The analysis is supplemented by illustrative examples forI-beams for which the effect of various parameters on the initial postbuckling path is also discussed.

Notes: Abstract In this paper the effect of the interaction of two loadings, and of the deviation from right angle on the buckling mechanism of a rectangular two-bar frame is discussed. Using a nonlinear stability analysis it is found that there is a critical value of the ratio of the two loadings, as well as of the deviation from right angle, for which the physical equilibrium path and the physically unacceptable complementary path meet each other at an asymmetric bifurcation point. At this point, the response of the frame changes from an elastic limit point instability to a stable equilibrium path associated with inelastic buckling. The analysis is supplemented by a variety of numerical results obtained by an efficient and reliable simplified nonlinear stability analysis applied for the first time to a non-rectangular frame.

Notes: Abstract Allozyme frequency data from five Greek wild sympatric populations of Drosophila melanogaster and D. simulans along a North-South gradient were analyzed for genotype-environment relationships. The regression coefficient of genetic distance on geographic distance indicates that there is a significant relationship between these parameters for D. melanogaster only. Highly significant differences in specific alleles at certain loci were found between the various local populations studied. The changes in αGpdh F of D. melanogaster and Est-6 F of D. simulans exhibited clinal patterns in allele frequencies. In addition, analysis of D. melanogaster αGpdh Fand Adh F allele frequencies shows that the Greek data do not have regression coefficients (regressing allele frequency on degrees North of latitude) of the same sign as East-and West-Coast United-States populations. These contradictory data are discussed in relation to what is known about the maintenance of the Adh and αGpdh polymorphisms.

Description: Currently, the multitude of information about marine geophysical, biological data and spatial patterns increases tremendously. Compared to the increasing amount of information only a few concepts and techniques are applied for efficient visualisation and optimal analysis of present and upcoming data sets. There is a considerable need for ageneralised analysis of acoustic data, still photographs, video flows and video mosaics of the sea floor. For example, more than 4200 geo-referenced video mosaics have been derived during the RV Polarstern equipped with the remotely operated vehicle (ROV) Victor6000 cruise to the Håkon Mosby Mud Volcano (HMMV) in 2003. Therefore the automatic or semiautomatic image analysis gains more and more in importance concerning greyscale, colour, texture and contour detection. An automatic extraction of the areas of interest could be realized by edge detection andgeometrical shape recognition of the Freeman Chaincode algorithm. The transmission of the shapes into polygons allows a further spatial analysis within GIS and with geostatistical methods. This includes spatial budgets of geological and biogeochemical cycles and characterisation of habitats at the seafloor based on the combination ofseveral information layers. The geo-statistical methodology is used to be practiced to analyse structures and to describe spatial patterns. The classical tool, the interpolation, takes place in describing the variography of spatial dependence of data (semi-variance) as a function oftheir distance. This spatial variability is examined in order to derive a model which describes the spatial characteristics of the variables. This model is the crucial input for the actual interpolation, the Kriging. The Indicator Kriging used in this study operates with data from a bivariate data type to predict the probability of thresholds (e.g. occurrence yes (1) or no (0)) of the same data type at unsampled locations. Thus the kriged surfaces reveal whether the probability of occurrence of a certain habitat indicator e.g. bacteria mats 〈 50% is particularly high or particularly low. This can be accomplished successively for all interesting regions. Finally a potential habitat map of the benthic communities at HMMV results from the interpolation. Some surfaces can remain undefined, since the Kriging permits an interpolation only up to the distancedetermined by the semivariogram. Beyond that no statements about surfaces aremade. For validation of the computed results, Kriging allows calculation of standard errors of prediction. Furthermore, we applied a cross-validation analysis which givesinformation about the accuracy of the computed maps. The combination of semiautomatic video mosaic analysis and geo-statistical methods enables us to estimate the percentage of coverage by diverse parameters. The different information layers were overlaid by GIS technique for the consideration of different geochemical habitats, mud flows and calculation of spatial budgets.

Description: The combination of new underwater technology as Remotely Operating Vehicles (ROVs), high resolution video imagery, and software to compute georeferenced mosaics of the seafloorprovides new opportunities for marine geological or biological studies and applications in offshore industry. Even during single surveys by ROVs or towed systems large amounts of images are compiled. While these underwater techniques are now well-engineered, there is still a lack of methods for the automatic analysis of the acquired image data. During ROV dives more than 4200 georeferenced video mosaics were compiled for the Håkon Mosby MudVolcano (HMMV). Mud volcanoes as HMMV are considered as significant source locations for methane characterised by unique chemoautotrophic communities as Beggiatoa mats. For the detection and quantification of the spatial distribution of Beggiatoa mats an automated image analysis technique was developed, which applies watershed transformation and relaxationbasedlabelling of pre-segemented regions. Comparison of the data derived by visual inspection of 2840 video images with the automated image analysis revealed similarities, a precisionbetter than 90%. We consider this as a step towards a time efficient and accurate analysis of seafloor images for computation of geochemical budgets and identification of habitats at theseafloor.
