Abstract:
Notes:
Summary The use of the Parr bomb procedure in micro halogen determinations has two principle objections in that it is sometimes unreliable, and precise chloride determinations in particular are very difficult to obtain due to the presence of a high concentration of salts in the solution. The method proposed overcomes the former by use of more vigorous reaction conditions, whilst the latter is avoided by application of cation exchange to the alkaline solution. The halide ion is titrated potentiometrically, in the normal manner, with 0.005 N silver nitrate solution and an electrode system consisting of a platinum indicator electrode and a mercurymercurous sulphate reference electrode. No difficulty was encountered in the determination of bromide and iodide ions, since the electrodes are very sensitive near the end point to 0.02-ml additions of the silver nitrate solution, even without an exchange reaction; this represents an improvement on similar methods previously reported and is probably due to the smaller amount of oxidation mixture taken, although the electrode system was different and platinum black was used to help destroy sodium peroxide. The method is simple, rapid and suitable for series determinations.
