Notes: Abstract The reaction of 1,4-(2′-sulpho-4′-methylanilino)anthraquinone (quinizarin green,QG) and its non-sulphonated derivative (NSQG) with Ce(III), Th(IV), and U(VI) was investigated. Spectrophotometric and conductometric studies were carried out to investigate the stoichiometry of the complexes formed. The studies revealed the formation of 1∶1 and 1∶2 (M∶L) complexes. The apparent stability constants of the different complexes were determined. The structure of the ligand in the solid chelates was studied by IR spectrophotometry which showed that the chelate formation takes place through the oxygen of the C=O group and the α-imino nitrogen.

Notes: Summary The spectral absorption and acid-base characteristics of naphthazarin (5,8-dihydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone,NAZA) in ethanol water medium containing 50% (v/v) ethanol have been studied, and thepKa values determined. Two equilibria are established in solution atpH 2.5–11.5, based on the acid dissociation of the nonionized form of the reagent. The existence of these equilibria is confirmed by potentiometricpH titrations and the precision of the equilibrium study is improved. The composition, molar absorptivities and stability constants of the chelates ofNAZA with yttrium(III) have been determined spectrophotometrically under the conditions encountered in this study. The complexation equilibria existing in solution are discussed. The Y(NAZA) monoligand chelate formed atpH 5.5 (ɛ=1.15×104lmol−1 cm−1 at 595 nm) allows the determination of 1.95–8.86 µg ml−1 yttrium. Interferences and their elimination have been studied.

Notes: Abstract The complexes of 1,4-di(4-methylanilino)-anthraquinone (alizarin cyanin green) and 1-amino-2-bromo-4(2-sulpho-4-methylanilino)anthraquinone (alizarin pure blue B) with Fe(II), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) have been investigated and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, conductometric, electronic and infrared spectral studies. The values of logB * for the different complexes are determined. I. R. spectra of the ligands in the solid chelates indicate that the bonding sites in the chelates are the α-imino-nitrogen and the oxygen of its neighbouring C=O group. The chelate formation leads to proton displacement.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung.
Notes: Summary.  A new direct spectrophotometric method for the determination of magnesium oxide in Portland cement and cement clinker is proposed. The method is based on a reaction with quinizarin (QUIN, 1,4-dihydroxyanthraquinone) in ethanol-water (50% v/v) solution at pH=9.5–10.3. Under optimum conditions, the determination of 0.5–3.9 μgċml−1 of magnesium is possible. The method is rapid and selective and possesses good accuracy and precision. The analysis of cement materials of variable magnesium content is feasible over the concentration range of 0.85–3.2 μgċml−1 Mg; the detection limit is 25.3 ngċml−1 Mg. Under the given conditions, no constituents normally present in Portland cement materials interfer. The procedure was tested by analyzing several standard reference materials and real samples of Portland cement and has been found to give satisfactory results. It has been satisfactorily applied to the determination of magnesium in clay and raw meal.

Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Die Absorptionsspektren von 2-Hydroxy-1,4-naphthochion (HNQ) in Ein- und Zweikomponentensystemen werden diskutiert.
Notes: Summary The electronic absorption spectra of 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone (HNQ) in one- and two-component solvents are discussed. The visible absorption of this reagent has been shown to arise from a charge-transfer transition of the zwitterionic tautomer stabilized by a hydrogen bond donating solvent. The formation constant of the 1:1 hydrogen bonded complex with methanol, ethanol, andn-propanol has been determined at 25 °C from the spectral behaviour in mixed solvents. The tautomerization equilibrium ofHNQ in aqueous ethanol is demonstrated and characterized. The dependence of the absorbance maximum ofHNQ on the hydrogen bond donor ability of the solvent in the visible spectrum, as measured by theTaft-Kamlet α parameter, has been established. Experimentally derived evidence is supplied to justify the recommendation ofHNQ as a novel probe for hydrogen bond donor ability in pure solvents and in mixed aqueous solvents.
