    Description: During ODP Leg 168, 10 sites were drilled across the eastern flank of the Juan de Fuca Ridge (JdFR), to examine the conditions of fluid-rock interaction in three distinct hydrothermal regimes (referred to as the Hydrothermal Transition (HT), Buried Basement (BB) and Rough Basement (RB) transects), extending over a ~120 km linear transect perpendicular to the spreading ridge. This was carried out in an attempt to constrain the conditions and processes that control the location, style and magnitude of low temperature (〈150°C) fluid-rock interaction within this setting. This paper presents new data on the petrology, mineral chemistry and whole rock strontium and oxygen isotopic compositions of basalts from the eastern flank of the JdFR, in order to investigate the extent, style and sequence of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration and to establish how the hydrothermal regime evolved with time. Throughout the flank, a progressive sequence of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration has been identified, marked by changes in the dominant secondary mineral assemblage, changing from: chlorite+chlorite/smectite; to iron oyxhydroxide+celadonite; to saponite+/-pyrite; culminating at present with Ca- to CaMg(+/-Fe,Mn)-carbonate. The changes in secondary mineralogy have been used to infer a series of systematic shifts in the conditions of alteration that occurred as the basement moved off-axis and was progressively buried by sediment. In general, hydrothermal alteration of the uppermost oceanic crust commenced under open, oxidative conditions, with interaction between unmodified to slightly modified seawater and basaltic crust, to a regime in which circulation of a strongly modified seawater-derived fluid was more restricted, and alteration occurred under non-oxidative conditions. Across the flank, petrological observations and microprobe analyses indicate that the observed ranges in secondary mineral composition are directly related to changes in the geochemical and textural characteristics of the basement, as well as to interaction between fluids and phases from the four stages of alteration. This is suggestive of an increase in fluid-rock increased with time. Whole rock 87Sr/86Sr and d18O analyses of basalts from across the eastern flank of the JdFR reinforce petrological observations, with 87Sr/86Sr and d18O values slightly elevated above accepted pristine MORB values for this region. These results are consistent with an increase in the amount of fluid-rock interaction with time. Across the flank, enrichment in the 87Sr/86Sr and d18O relative to MORB, is influenced by a number of factors, including: local and regional variations in the crustal lithology and structure; the age of the crust; the extent of bulk rock alteration; and theoretically, the relative abundance of different isotopically-enriched secondary mineral phases in the crust.

    Description: The North Atlantic right whale Eubalaena glacialis (NARW), currently numbering 〈410 individuals, is on a trajectory to extinction. Although direct mortality from ship strikes and fishing gear entanglements remain the major threats to the population, reproductive failure, resulting from poor body condition and sublethal chronic entanglement stress, is believed to play a crucial role in the population decline. Using photogrammetry from unmanned aerial vehicles, we conducted the largest population assessment of right whale body condition to date, to determine if the condition of NARWs was poorer than 3 seemingly healthy (i.e. growing) populations of southern right whales E. australis (SRWs) in Argentina, Australia and New Zealand. We found that NARW juveniles, adults and lactating females all had lower body condition scores compared to the SRW populations. While some of the difference could be the result of genetic isolation and adaptations to local environmental conditions, the magnitude suggests that NARWs are in poor condition, which could be suppressing their growth, survival, age of sexual maturation and calving rates. NARW calves were found to be in good condition. Their body length, however, was strongly determined by the body condition of their mothers, suggesting that the poor condition of lactating NARW females may cause a reduction in calf growth rates. This could potentially lead to a reduction in calf survival or an increase in female calving intervals. Hence, the poor body condition of individuals within the NARW population is of major concern for its future viability.

    Notes: We have studied transmission electron microscopy (TEM) cross sections and plan views of YBaCuO films on SrTiO3 single-crystal substrates at various stages of post-deposition anneal. These TEM studies reveal in extraordinary detail the process of nucleation of epitaxial crystal structure characteristic of the films. In partially annealed samples sputtered from separate Cu, Y, and BaF2 sources, we see the 2-4-8 phase nucleates at the substrate interface, with the c axis parallel to the [001] substrate direction (surface normal). Upon further annealing, the 1-2-3 phase nucleates on this layer with the c axis parallel to each of the [100], [010], and [001] substrate directions. Rapid growth in the a- and b-axis directions results in an uneven "basket weave'' surface texture. This information is crucial to the successful control and optimization of crystal orientation and surface morphology of superconducting thin films necessary for the application of this material to multilayer structures for electronic devices.

    Notes: We present a study of the temporal decay of photoluminescence (PL) as detected by picosecond excitation correlation spectroscopy (PECS). We analyze the correlation signal that is obtained from two simple models; one where radiative recombination dominates, the other where trapping processes dominate. It is found that radiative recombination alone does not lead to a correlation signal. Parallel trapping type processes are found to be required to see a signal. To illustrate this technique, we examine the temporal decay of the PL signal for In-alloyed, semi-insulating GaAs substrates. We find that the PL signal indicates a carrier lifetime of roughly 100 ps, for excitation densities of 1×1016–5×1017 cm−3. PECS is shown to be an easy technique to measure the ultrafast temporal behavior of PL processes because it requires no ultrafast photon detection. It is particularly well suited to measuring carrier lifetimes.

    Notes: Infrared photoluminescence measurements have been made of a number of HgTe-CdTe superlattice samples as a function of temperature from liquid He to room temperature. The experimental results are compared with calculations of the band gap of these materials and the effects of layer thicknesses, valence-band offset, effective mass, and Hg in the CdTe layers are investigated. The data are in reasonable agreement with the calculations for zero (or small) valence-band offset and no Hg in the CdTe layers.
