    Description: Currently during fabrication of the Space Shuttle booster rocket motors, the use of silicone and silicone-containing products is prohibited in most applications. Many shop aids and other materials containing silicone have the potential, if they make contact with a bond surface, to transfer some of the silicone to the substrates being bonded. Such transfer could result in a reduction of the bond strength or even failure of the subsequent bonds. This concern is driving the need to understand the effect of silicones and the concentration needed to affect a given bond-line strength. Additionally, as silicone detection methods used for materials acceptance improve what may have gone unnoticed earlier is now being detected. Thus, realistic silicone limits for process materials (below which bond performance is satisfactory) are needed rather than having an absolute no silicone permitted policy.

    Description: The characteristics of 17 cover types (13 forest types or tree species and 4 nonforest cover types) in Michigan are discussed as well as their interpretation from medium scale color infrared photography. The occurrence of each type is described by region and site requirements. Those attributes of a tree or stand which are helpful when attempting to interpret the type from a vertical perspective are discussed as well as common crown types. The identification of the forest type or tree species by using image characteristics (size, shape, shadow, color, texture, pattern, or association) is discussed. Ground photographs and sketches of individual trees are included. Stereograms of typical stands are available.

    Description: A set of photo interpretation keys is presented to provide a structured approach to the identification of land cover/use categories as specified in the Michigan Resource Inventory Act. The designated categories are urban and; built up lands; agricultural lands; forest land; nonforested land; water bodies; wetlands; and barren land. The keys were developed for use with medium scale (1:20,000 to 1:24,000) color infrared aerial photography. Although each key is generalized in that it relies only upon the most distinguishing photo characteristics in separating the various land cover/use categories, additional interpretation characteristics, distinguishing features and background material are given.

    Description: Existing biomass studies were compiled for determining their applicability in measuring forest biomass in an entirely new way. Over sixty tree-weight tables were prepared from existing tables or formulas. An estimate of forest biomass was made on a defined area by using Landsat Satellite data analysis, existing forest cover type maps and actual weighting of the entire biomass. Control plots were cruised for normal volume data and weight data, harvested and weighed to determine actual tonnage yields.

    Description: The potential of remote sensing systems to provide a cost-effective inventory tool in the case of forest resources is currently of interest to a variety of natural resources management agencies. A number of studies have been performed regarding the use of Landsat data for mapping forest resources in Michigan. The present paper is concerned with current research, which has been directed toward the development and evaluation of computer-implemented classifications for the identification and characterization of coniferous forest types in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula. Attention is given to the characteristic response curves from Landsat MSS data, spectral response curve models, and forest cover-type discrimination. It is found that spectral response curve models can be used to evaluate and explain the characteristic spectral responses of coniferous forest types on a snow-covered, winter Landsat scene.

    Description: Landsat MSS data were evaluated for mapping forest cover types in the northern Lower Peninsula of Michigan. The study examined seasonal variations, interpretation procedures and vegetation composition/distribution and their effect on overall classification accuracy and ability to identify individual pine species. Photographic images were used for visual interpretations while digital analysis was performed using a common (ERDAS) microcomputer image processing system. The classification schemes were evaluated using contingency tables and were ranked using the KAPPA statistic. The various classification schemes were ranked differentially according to study site location. Visual interpretation procedures ranked best, or least accurate, depending on the spatial distribution and complexity of the forest cover. Supervised classification techniques were more accurate than unsupervised clustering over all sites and seasons. Maximum likelihood classification of June data was superior to any digital classification technique of February data. The study indicates that classification accuracy is more dependent on the composition and distribution of forests in the northern lower Peninsula of Michigan than on the selection of a particular classification scheme.

    Description: The use of complete enumeration in the form of photointerpreted forest cover-type maps to evaluate the accuracy of Landsat classifications was compared with assessments made directly from the aerial photography. A computerized, geographic information system was utilized to compare the Landsat classifications with the cover-type maps on a pixel-by-pixel basis. Error maps of pixels which were similarly misclassified by a variety of algorithms contained a larger number of errors than were verified from the aerial photography. For the two test sites studied, only 67 and 52 percent of the pixels which were originally considered to be in error were substantiated as being in error. Discrepancies between the two results were primarily caused by definitional differences between the cover-type maps and the Landsat classifications, especially with regard to minimum-type size and crown closure estimates of forest land.
