Notes: The problem of crystallinity determination of polyethylene powder was studied utilizing the method of inverse chromatography. The data obtained were found to be dependent on the polymer particle diameter. A relation was proposed describing this observation, and using this realtion the crystallinity of a polyethylene sample was calculated.

Notes: The method of gel permeation chromatography was used to study the structural changes of poly(2,6-dimethyl-1,4-phenylene oxide) in the course of thermooxidative degradation. During the degradation two principal processes occur: random scission and crosslinking. The latter process leads to the formation of insoluble fractions. The reaction rates and activation energies of both processes have been determined. The mechanism of degradation as well as the influence of some additives is discussed on the basis of experimental data.

Notes: Theoretical relations between the change of molecular weights of thermally exposed polymers with arbitrary initial distribution and time have been derived. These relations were used to correlate the changes of molecular weights of thermally exposed polypropylene.

Notes: The kinetics of the ethylene polymerization catalyzed by the Cp2TiEtCl/AlEtCl2 system in toluene were investigated. Hydrolysis of AlEtCl2 in benzene was studied and the resulting oxyaluminium compounds were used as cocatalysts together with Cp2TiEtCl as catalyst for ethylene polymerization. A strong enhancement of the cocatalytic activity for the formation of oxyaluminium compounds was observed, accompanied by an increase of molecular weight. The catalyst efficiencies were found to be rather high in both the Cp2TiEtCl/AlEtCl2 and the Cp2TiEtCl/(AlEtCl2 + H2O) system. Transfer reactions are suppressed under the applied experimental conditions, but termination reactions, leading to non-stationary kinetic patterns, may be assumed for both systems.

Notes: Ethylene polymerization, catalyzed by Cp2TiEtCl or Cp2TiMeCl and cocatalyzed by oxyaluminium compounds, formed via hydrolysis of AlEtCl2, AtEt2Cl, AlEt3, AlMeCl2, AlMe2Cl, AlMe3, and AlEt(OBu)Cl, was studied. The cocatalytic activity of oxyaluminium compounds was found to decrease with increasing number of alkyl substituents in the corresponding alanes. The only inactive cocatalyst from the oxyaluminium compounds studied is the one formed via hydrolysis of AlEt(OBu)Cl. Oxyaluminium compounds from methylalanes are substantially less active than those from ethylalanes. If the same aloxane cocatalyst is employed, the catalytic activities of both Cp2TiEtCl and Cp2TiMeCl are similar. The molecular weight distributions of polyethylene are narrow for the systems Cp2TiRCl/(oxyaluminium compounds from AlEtCl2); fairly broader distributions were found for systems Cp2TiRCl/(oxyaluminium compounds from AlMeCl2). Systems with oxyaluminium compounds from dialkyl- or trialkylalanes yield polyethylene with distinctly bimodal distribution curves. The mechanism of ethylene polymerization catalyzed by titanocene systems cocatalyzed by oxyaluminium compounds is discussed.

Notes: Samples of industrial high-density polyethylenes (Liten Macro, Liten FB 29, and Hostalen GM 9255 F) were divided into fractions by precipitation fractionation. The original samples and their fractions were characterized by light scattering, GPC, and viscometry. For all samples the molecular weight distribution is of logarithmic-normal type. High-density polyethylenes under investigation contain also high-molecular-weight fractions of pronouncedly branched structure, the content of branched molecules being, of course, considerably smaller than that in low-density polyethylenes.

Notes: The relation between composition of the one-phase titanium-based silica supported catalysts for gas-phase ethylene polymerization, and the ability of these catalysts to control the molecular weight of polymer using hydrogen has been studied. Halogen containing alkylaluminium compounds and alkoxy groups on titanium promote the chain transfer process. A significant polymerization rate lowering effect is caused by hydrogen. However, catalyst activity fully revives after hydrogen removal from the polymerization system. The proportion of active titanium was found to be 18±4% in the presence of hydrogen, and the value of propagation rate constant (kp) was calculated to be 190±45 L/mol.s. © 1993 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: Abstract Hydroxyaluminium and hydroxychromium pillared montmorillonites were prepared by intercalation and subsequent calcination of Ca-montmorillonite separated from Jelšový Potok bentonite (Central Slovakia). Ca-montmorillonite and pillared clays were studied by thermal and X-ray diffraction methods. Nitrogen adsorption-absorption data were used to determine pore size distribution, specific surface area, volume of micropores and surface of mesopores. Isomerization of o-xylene to p- and m-xylene, and o-xylene disproportionation were used to test the catalytic activity of investigated materials. The measurements showed increasing catalytic activity in the order Ca-montmorillonite〈chromium pillared montmorillonite〈aluminium pillared montmorillonite. The results confirmed that increasing surface area had a positive effect on the conversion and disproportionation of o-xylene.

Notes: A simple and universal relation between the mutual change of weight and number average molecular weight at random degradation of polymers has been derived. A good agreement has been found between this relation and the experimental results obtained at peroxide initiated degradation of polypropylene.
