    Notes: Abstract A continous, deterministic mathematical model is used to predict population distributions by age at any time, given the initial distribution and the variation of birth and death rates with age and time. Solutions are obtained on a computer using a semi-discretization algorithm in which time derivatives in the partial differential equations are replaced by finite-difference expressions. The resulting sets of ordinary differential equations are solved by a predictor-corrector method. Graphical results are shown for some examples.

    Notes: Abstract The nonlinear differential equations of growth proposed by Volterra (1931) are used as the basis for a dynamic model of ann-element system withp specified, terminal conditions andp missing initial conditions. The resulting two-point boundary-value problem can be solved, ifp is not large, by the shooting method used previously by Huddleston (1967). A numerical example withn=4 andp=2 is solved on a digital computer, and some results are presented.

    Notes: Abstract The question of how to fit a general cubic model of a multicomponent, interactive growth system to observed data is addressed. A multidimensional-polynomial type of regression analysis is used, with a least-squares criterion. By testing the scheme on a problem with known solution, the way in which the accuracy of the results varies with the number of datum points used is investigated in an heuristic manner.

    Notes: The problem of the elastica is generalized to include the effect if shear as well as axial strain. This leads to a non-linear two-point boundary-value problem composed of five first-order differential equations. At first the problem is linearized to study the way in which the bucking loads are modified by the combination of effects. For a simple column, the eigenvalues are found to be zeros of a third-order polynomial, and these are evaluated by a straightforward Newton-Raphson technique using a digital computer. The postbucking behaviour is then studied by using the computer and a ‘shooting’ method to solve the non-linear problem. For the special case of the prismatic column, graphs plotted by the computer are displayed to show the variation of load with both lateral and axial deflection for various combinations of axial compressibility and shear deformability. For one particular case, the deflected center line at various load levels is shown.
