Notes: Thermal stresses induced during cooling from the fabrication temperature of a fiber with a noncubic superconducting ceramic coating are analyzed theoretically. The coating considered has a preferred crystallographic orientation such that the c axis of the coating material is perpendicular to the fiber surface which, in turn, results in different thermal expansion coefficients in the radial and the tangential directions in the coating. The thermal stresses are shown to result both from the mismatch between the fiber and the coating, and from the thermal expansion anisotropy of the coating. Stresses due to bending of the fiber/coating to form a superconducting component are also addressed. A critical radius of curvature of bending is obtained below which segmentation of the coating is predicted.

Notes: We demonstrate that the thermal expansion behavior of a material can be substantially modified by the presence of residual stresses. In the case of a composite tube made of two layers of dissimilar steels, in situ neutron diffraction measurements revealed a significant difference in the coefficients of thermal expansion along the radial and tangential directions. It is shown that the observed difference in thermal expansion is due to the change of residual stresses with temperature. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ball-on-ring tests have been used extensively to measure the biaxial strength of brittle materials. However, the tests and analyses are limited to materials of uniform properties. An analytical model is developed in the present study to analyze thin bilayer discs subjected to ball-on-ring tests. It is found that closed-form solutions for bilayer discs can be obtained from existing solutions for monolayer discs by replacing the position of the neutral surface and the flexural rigidity of monolayers with those of bilayers. To validate the analytical solutions for bilayers, ball-on-ring tests are performed on a thin Al2O3 scale grown on an oxide dispersion-strengthened FeCrAl alloy disc and photo-stimulated luminescence spectroscopy is used to measure the stress distributions in the Al2O3 layer. In this case, the stress-induced peak shift of the R lines emitted by the Al2O3 scale is used to determine the average stress through the scale thickness. Good agreement between predictions and measurements is obtained.

Notes: Abstract Matrix cracking bridged by intact fibres, which debond from the matrix and then slip against the matrix in friction, has been analysed for unidirectional fibre-reinforced ceramic composites under tensile loading parallel to the fibre axis. The effect of bonding at the fibre-matrix interface, Poisson's effect of the fibre, and residual stresses were included in the analysis. Both the crack-opening displacement and the displacement of the composite due to interfacial debonding have been analytically related to the fibre bridging stress. The critical stress for matrix cracking was also analysed. The existing solutions can be recovered by considering a special case in the present generalized solution.

Notes: Abstract The interfacial properties of fibre-reinforced ceramic composites have been evaluated by using the indentation technique. The ratio of the residual fibre displacement after complete unloading to the fibre displacement at peak loading is examined. Assuming a constant interfacial shear stress at an unbonded interface, this ratio is 0.5. However, deviation of this ratio from 0.5 is always obtained from experimental results. Both Poisson's effect and the existence of the residual axial stress have been proposed to explain this deviation. A methodology is presented in this study to classify conditions for which either Poisson's effect or the residual axial stress dominates this deviation. The application of this methodology to Nicalon fibre-reinforced lithium aluminosilicate glass-ceramic is also illustrated.

Notes: Abstract Interfacial debonding and matrix cracking due to residual axial stresses have been analysed for unidirectional fibre-reinforced ceramic composites. The analytical solutions for the crack-opening displacement, the axial displacement of the composite due to interfacial debonding, and the critical residual axial stress for matrix cracking have been obtained. The solutions were then compared with those for tensile loading in the fibre direction. Three issues related to Part I, i.e. the effective fracture toughness of the composite, the critical loading stress for matrix cracking in the presence of residual stresses, and the debonded fibre length due to loading, were also addressed in the present study.
