A nonlinear Schrödinger equation is derived for an ion acoustic surface wave propagating on the interface between a plasma and vacuum, taking into account all the nonlinearities, and especially the nonlinear surface currents. The nonlinear frequency shift is obtained in terms of the plasma dielectric constant. The effect of the nonlinear surface currents on the nonlinear behavior of the surface wave is assessed. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
