On Ba2CrF6 and Ba5Cr3F18, a Contribution to the Structural Chemistry of Chromium(II) and Barium Transition Metal FluoridesDuring studies to prepare single crystals of Ba2CrF6 the tetragonal compound Ba5CrIICr2IIIF18 was isolated and identified by x-ray structure determination (a = 2061.1, c = 1538.2 pm, space group 141/a, Z = 16; wR = 0.0263 for 2637 independent reflections and 237 parameters refined). The structure is based on a framework [Ba4Cr2F12]2+ with isolated [CrF6]3- octahedra (average CrIII-F = 191.8 pm), in the channels of which infinite helices [BaF]+ are inserted on the one hand, and separate dimers 1/2 [Cr2IIF10]6- on the other. The dimer consists of extremely distorted units of an octahedron (CrII-F = 4× 195.9, 2× 234.4 pm) and a trigonal prism (CrII-F = 4× 198.1, 2× 243.3 pm), which are sharing an edge. The distances are compared to those of other chromium(II) fluoro compounds. The structural relations between Ba5Cr3F18 and the BaTiF5 resp. BaFeF5 types and related ones are discussed.
Notes:
