    Notes: A criterion is developed for the selection of the best pairing of the control and manipulated variables of a multiloop control system. This criterion is based on the difficulty caused by the interaction terms (the off-diagonal elements) in finding the inverse of the steady state gain matrix. From an analysis based on the proposition that the most desired or best pairing is that one for which the system most closely resembles a set of independent single-loop systems, a quantitative measure of the best pairing is obtained. Although the development of the pairing criterion is based on purely algebraic principles, the validity of the pairing criterion is evident from analogous developments obtained within the control framework. Furthermore, it is shown that the pairing criterion may be used to determine the stability of a multiloop control system, thus enhancing the value of the criterion presented.

    Notes: Methods are presented for the determination of the transient values of the vaporization efficiencies from the knowledge of various combinations of the transient values of operating variables. For the case where the temperature and the composition of the liquid phase for each plate are known, a direct solution for the vaporization efficiencies is presented. Also, a method is presented for the determination of the mixing parameters of a generalized plate model on the basis of known transient values of certain operating variables.

    Notes: A procedure based on kinetic principles is presented for the development of models for the adsorption of mixtures of gases in any number of layers by solid adsorbents. Equations of state for two-dimensional gas mixtures which are thermodynamically consistent with the adsorption models are also presented. The constants in the adsorption models for mixtures are obtained from the isotherms for the pure components. Good accuracy for the predicted adsorption of mixtures for the data available was obtained by use of a model for the adsorption of mixtures in bimolecular layers.

    Notes: A new method is presented for the determination of adsorption equilibria for pure components and mixtures both at high and low pressures. Isotherms for carbon dioxide, methane, ethane, propane, i-butane, n-butane, i-pentane, and n-pentane on activated carbon (Columbia grade NXC 8/10) and on silica gel (Mobil Sorbead H) at 75°, 125°, 200°, and 300°F. are given for pressures ranging from below atmospheric to 1,000 lb./sq. in. Also, adsorption equilibria data are presented for several multicomponent mixtures of the light hydrocarbon gases.The data collected were correlated with good accuracy by use of the two-layer kinetic model developed previously by Gonzalez.

    Notes: The bulk chemical properties of an impregnated chromia-alumina catalyst with respect to several gases, CO, CO2, C3H6, were determined as a function of the degree of oxidation of the surface of the catalyst. The importance of the results lies in the demonstration that a simple method described herein can be used to obtain significant data on catalytic surfaces. Briefly, the prior adsorption of oxygen by the catalyst tended to promote the adsorption of carbon monoxide and to prohibit the adsorption of carbon dioxide. Far more carbon monoxide was adsorbed by the highly oxidized surface than could be accounted for on the basis of adsorbed carbon dioxide. The quantity of propylene adsorbed also increased with an increase in the oxidation of the surface. The results are explained on the basis of two types of adsorbed oxygen atoms.
