    Notes: The effective Young's moduli of co-continuous Al–Al2O3 composites over the 5–97 vol% Al2O3 composition range were experimentally measured and compared with theoretical composite modulus values predicted using the methods of Ravichandran, Tuchinskii, Hashin-Shtrikman, and the effective medium approximation (EMA). The influence of phase morphology and the modulus ratio (E1/E2) of the constituent phases on the resulting experimental and calculated Young's modulus is discussed. For two-phased co-continuous composites with a modulus ratio greater than 5, the EMA, with an appropriate microstructural shape factor, was the most consistent method for approximating the composite Young's modulus over the entire composition range.

    Notes: Cracks situated parallel to, and very near, the interface in layered, ductile-brittle composite specimens were investigated with finite-element analysis. Elastic, plastic and thermal properties previously obtained from experiments were utilized in the model. A routine was employed for automatic crack extension and remeshing, enabling simulation of incremental crack propagation. The elastic, thermal and plastic contributions to crack propagation behavior were investigated, along with the variation of these with crack length and crack-tip position. Thermal residual stresses are shown to have a large influence on crack path, although this is mitigated to some extent by plasticity. The implications on the inherent reliability of joints and layered materials containing brittle constituents are discussed.

    Notes: A method to determine free fluoride concentration in soluble cocoa powder by a fluoride-selective electrode was developed and validated. Calibration was linear over the 0.51 to 3.03 ppm range. Free fluoride ion concentration data were in the 0.52 to 1.49 ppm range, with recoveries varying from 81% to 89% using a standard addition procedure.

    Notes: Crack growth under static and cyclic mechanical loading in lead zirconate titanate was studied using four point bend specimens in poled and unpoled states. Fatigue crack growth occurred at lower stress intensity factors than crack growth observed under static loading. The relation between crack velocity and applied stress intensity factor under static loading was affected by poling and followed a power-law relationship. Crack velocity vs. stress intensity amplitude under cyclic loading followed a Paris power-law relationship and was found to be unaffected by poling. A controlled unloading experiment revealed that the apparent stress intensity factor for crack extension decreased with increased unloading time but was essentially unaffected when the unloading cycle was less than five seconds, hence indicating the absence of an extrinsic fatigue mechanism.

    Notes: Scratch tests were conducted using a standard pyramid indenter against α-SiAlON ceramics with different microstructures: (i) fine equiaxed grains and (ii) large elongated grains. The formation and propagation of cracks were investigated via focused ion-beam milling, with an emphasis on the effect of microstructure on material removal. The fine equiaxed microstructure exhibited high resistance to material removal at low loads, because of its high hardness and homogeneous structure. As the load increased, radial and lateral cracks developed, resulting in large-scale chipping. In contrast, the large elongated microstructure showed a propensity to form microcracks and microabrasion, which is characteristic of partial grain removal, at low loads. With increasing loads, however, the large elongated grains suppressed the propagation of radial and lateral cracks, and, consequently, no large-scale chipping occurred. Implications for material design in abrasive-wear conditions have been discussed.

    Notes: The single-edge V-notched-beam (SEVNB) testing geometry was used to measure the crack growth resistance (R-curve) behavior of multilayered alumina–zirconia composites. Fracture mechanics weight function analysis was applied to predict the R-curve behavior of multilayered composites having a stepwise change in composition. These results were then used to differentiate the influence of residual stresses from crack-bridging stresses on the measured R-curve behavior.

    Notes: Three calcium α-SiAlON microstructures—namely, fine-grained, bimodal, and large elongated—were developed using powders of the same composition and then characterized. The evolution of grain size and morphology was determined to be a process of nucleation and growth that could be controlled with a two-step sintering technique. The extent of texture was identified in the as-hot-pressed materials as a function of sintering conditions. Samples with different microstructures exhibited different hardness and fracture toughness. The true hardness was derived from the intrinsic relation between applied loads and indent sizes. The effect of microstructure on hardness and fracture toughness was analyzed.

    Notes: Fracture from artificial spherical pores, as well as natural defects, in alumina in a grain-size range of 0.8-9.2 µm has been studied experimentally and compared with a fracture-mechanics model. Results from fracture-strength measurements have been combined with detailed fractographic analysis to elucidate the ensuing crack instability. Two existing models of possible crack configurations have been extended and contrasted. The semicircular crack as well as the circumferential crack both are described as flaws in the stress-concentrating field of a spherical pore. Surface correction terms afforded by the presence of the pore have been incorporated. A comparative computation shows that fracture occurs more likely from the semicircular crack configuration than the circumferential crack configuration.

    Notes: The performance and expected lifetime of piezoelectric ceramic components are ultimately defined by bulk material fatigue processes. In this work, strain accumulation of a ferroelectric/ferroelastic ceramic lead zirconate titanate is characterized under mechanical cycling using four-point bend bar geometry. Strain accumulation occurs at a higher rate than in creep alone, indicating that the processes are fatigue related, and it is confirmed by X-ray diffraction that the accumulated strain is contributed under both cyclic tensile and compressive stress by domain switching. The relative ranking of measured mechanical strains is nearly the same as the theoretical saturated domain-switching strains.
