Notes: Means are discussed for generation of high-quality multimegawatt gyrating electron beams using rf gyroresonant acceleration. TE111-mode cylindrical cavities in a uniform axial magnetic field have been employed for beam acceleration since 1968; such beams have more recently been employed for generation of radiation at harmonics of the gyration frequency. Use of a TE11-mode waveguide for acceleration, rather than a cavity, is discussed. It is shown that the applied magnetic field and group velocity axial tapers allow resonance to be maintained along a waveguide, but that this is impractical in a cavity. In consequence, a waveguide cyclotron autoresonance accelerator (CARA) can operate with near-100% efficiency in power transfer from rf source to beam, while cavity accelerators will, in practice, have efficiency values limited to about 40%. CARA experiments are described in which an injected beam of up to 25 A, 95 kV has had up to 7.2 MW of rf power added, with efficiencies of up to 96%. Such levels of efficiency are higher than observed previously in any fast-wave interaction, and are competitive with efficiency values in industrial linear accelerators. Scaling arguments suggest that good quality gyrating megavolt beams with peak and average powers of 100 MW and 100 kW can be produced using an advanced CARA, with applications in the generation of high-power microwaves and for possible remediation of flue gas pollutants. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: [Auszug] THE observed correlation between solar flare activity and intense radio bursts from Jupiter in the 5-38 Mc/s region has prompted several suggestions as to the origins of this radiation1-3. On the premise that the radio-activity is brought on by sudden eruptions of fast solar electrons as they ...

Notes: Abstract Attention is drawn to an obscure formula derived from relativistic quantum electrodynamics in the mid-'60s by Sokolov and Ternov for induced absorption and emission from highly relativistic electrons in a static uniform magnetic field. From their results, we develop handy formulae and graphs to help in preliminary designs for radiation sources to operate at high synchrotron harmonics. Approximate design parameters are given for 100 kW oscillators operating at wavelengths below 3mm, employing magnetic fields of less than 12 kG. It is shown that the Sokolov-Ternov formula can also be deduced from classical relativistic plasma wave theory, but for a numerical factor in one term. This term is shown to describe a gain mechanism which has apparently received scant notice in the gyrotron literature.

Notes: Abstract Helical magnetic wigglers for free electron lasers can produce non-helical electron trajectories if a uniform axial guide magnetic field is imposed. Friedland's necessary criterion for the existence of helical orbits is reviewed and shown to apply for non-relativistic electron energies. An experiment designed to test this criterion is described and results are compared with theory.

Notes: Abstract The influence of space charge forces on the performance of a single cacity gyrotron oscillator which uses a solid electron beam was investigated. It was found that space charge effects cause a large efficiency degradation as the beam current is increased, if the other experimental parameters are unchanged. A small increase in the magnetic field, however, can restore the efficiency to higher values.

Notes: Abstract A finite spread in axial momentum for the electron beam in a free electron laser amplifier is shown to decrease the small-signal gain. For millimeter and sub-millimeter wave amplifiers, where exponential growth dominates the gain, it is shown that the gain is approximately 3 db below that for a cold beam if the relative momentum spread (Δu/u)1/2 = (Go/248)1/2 (λo/L), where Go≫1 is the gain in db for the cold-beam case, λo is the magnetic wiggler period, and L is the amplifier length. Exact numerical examples are given for representative FEL amplifiers at 35 and 550 GHz.

Notes: Abstract The performance of a quasi-optical cyclotron harmonic gyroklystron operating on electron Bernstein modes is investigated. An expression for the linear power output has been derived. It is found that, for high order cyclotron harmonic operation, a gyroklystron involving the Bernstein modes has higher linear efficiency than a corresponding gyroklystron based on electromagnetic interactions alone.

Notes: Abstract The out-ridged waveguide is proposed for the use of gyrotrons operating at higher harmonics of electron gyrofrequency. Eigenvalues and the associated field components of the out-ridged waveguide are obtained with Ritz-Galerkin method. The prominent advantages of the out-ridged waveguide over the existing waveguide structures used in gyrotrons include the simplicity in manufacture, freedom from local modes, good separation of lower order modes, high power handling ability, and good beam-field coupling at higher harmonics of the electron gyrofrequency. Gain-frequency functional curves of the gyrotron traveling wave amplifiers with the out-ridged waveguide and some other waveguide structures are computed numerically by employing the general analytical results developed in [15].
