Notes: Products with 〉90% of 1,4-cis-units in the grafted chains are obtained by employing suitable concentrations of cobalt complexes as an initiator component in the grafting of butadiene onto chlorinated polycyclopentadiene. Grafting efficiencies 〉90% can be achieved. In contrast to grafting without using cobalt complexes the reaction rate is faster. Suitable solvents are chlorobenzene, 1,2-dichloroethane, or dichloromethane. Grafting efficiency, degree of grafting, and the molecular weights of the grafted chains are obtained by selective extraction of the grafts with pentane. The results suggest a cationic-coordinative mechanism, in most cases accompanied by a “pure” cationic grafting.

Description / Table of Contents: On Oxidation Stabilization of Cyclopentadiene Polymers. I. Polymerization of Cyclopentadiene and Chlorination of the PolymerCyclopentadiene was polymerized by aluminium chloride in carbon tetrachloride as a solvent. The obtained polycyclopentadiene (PCPD) was chlorinated and the influence of varying the solvent, the temperature, and the chlorine concentration as well as of using special additives investigated. The chlorinated polycyclopentadiene (CPCPD) has a maximum chlorine content of 63 mass-%. The chemical and physical properties of the products have been investigated. CPCPD with chlorine content above 45 mass-% remains colourless and soluble after having been exposed to air for several months. The oxidation rate is strongly decreased and no longer measurable by the weight increase. The thermal stability and the sensitivity to oxidation and elimination improve with increasing chlorine content of the products.
