Description: The current study aims to improve the trawl gear selectivity from the 40 mm square-mesh size currently in use by the Mediterranean demersal trawling fleet so as to reduce discards of hake (Merluccius merluccius), deep-water rose shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris), and red mullet (Mullus spp) while retaining as much as possible of the legally sized catch. This study targeted the development of four different methods; two of them relied on the codend mesh size and its configuration. The other two assessed the implementation of side escape panels (SEPs) in the trawl body in order to get the fish leaving the trawl net before entering the codend. The new selection system included a V-shaped guiding device to enhance fish contact with the SEPs. For all the investigated species, the good selective properties of the 40-mm square-mesh codend have been confirmed, which were further improved in combination with the 50-mm SEPs. Trawling gears could be made more selective also by using larger mesh sizes in the codend or in the escape panels. Nevertheless, this solution may be difficult to apply in Mediterranean waters for social and political reasons, while the development and compulsory use of square-mesh panels in the trawl body deserve attention.

Description: During three cruises in the Mid Atlantic Ridge area in 2016 and 2017, we studied the biomass of mesopelagic fish down to a depth of 600 m and identified and quantified the species composition of the catches. The biomass density was estimated considering the volume of water filtered by the cross-sectional area of the trawl blinded with 16 mm meshes (130 m–2), the distanced covered by the trawl (m) at a towing speed (transformed to m s–1) the effective tow time (min) and the catch (kg).

Description: During three cruises in the Mid Atlantic Ridge area in 2016 and 2017, we studied the biomass of mesopelagic fish and its potential as a source of protein and oil for animal feed and human consumption. We collected samples of mesopelagic species down to a depth of 600 m, studied fish behaviour, identified and quantified the species composition of the catches, analysed the chemical composition of the catch samples, and evaluated the presence of unwanted substances. Results showed that Maurolicus muelleri (Mueller's pearlside) and Benthosema glaciale (Glacier lantern fish) were the most abundant fish species in our samples and catches containing 80% fish can be a good source of protein and marine lipids including eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:5n3) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n3). Unwanted substances, except for Cd and As, were present at levels far lower than the limits set by European Union regulations. However, our experiments identified challenges that may limit the efficiency of commercial operations in the Northeast Atlantic. Combined real-time optical and/or multifrequency acoustic systems will be needed to improve species identification and ensure cost-effective fishing operations. Also, selective trawls that target only fish and release unwanted species are needed to secure high-quality oils and proteins.

Description: During three cruises in the Mid Atlantic Ridge area in 2016 and 2017, we collected samples of mesopelagic species down to a depth of 600 m. We studied fish behaviour and identified and quantified the species composition of the catches using HD videos (60 frames/s). For species identification and the estimation of the number of siphonophores/m³ we analysed the videos frame by frame using the tool VLC media player.

Description: During three cruises in the Mid Atlantic Ridge area in 2016 and 2017, we collected samples of mesopelagic species down to a depth of 600 m and analysed the chemical composition of the catch samples. We present gross proximate composition (g /100 g fresh weight) and fatty acid composition (% of total fatty acids) in mesopelagic raw material samples (values are mean ± standard deviation of 2–4 samples).

Description: Most selectivity experiments employ either the covered codend or paired gear methods. It is not always possible, however, to use these methods. Owing to operational, biological and/or environmental considerations, there may be no obvious way or it may be inappropriate to pair the test and control data. Hence, it will not be possible to estimate the selectivity of the gear and its uncertainty using standard statistical methods. This study presents a methodology for analysing the selectivity of fishing gears from unpaired test and control data. The uncertainty in the control and test population structures is accounted for by using a double bootstrapping procedure that takes into account both between-haul and within-haul variation. This bootstrapping approach is used to assess the selectivity of two different devices, a 139.5 mm T90 codend and a 135.9 mm codend with 140.9 mm lateral exit windows, in the Barents Sea pelagic cod trawl fishery. The purpose of the experiment was to test and compare the performance of the two devices in pelagic trawl fisheries, where high densities of fish can be encountered. Significant differences were detected between the T90 codend and the codend with the exit windows but only for sizes of cod between 55 and 76 cm.
