Notes: High dose nitrogen implantations have been performed at an energy of 30 keV. After high temperature annealing, 1200 °C, a buried layer composed mostly of silicon nitride is formed leaving an overlayer with a high fraction of crystalline silicon. The lattice constant of the overlayer and the region below the SiNx are reduced in 0.13% and 0.089%, respectively. The substitutional N seems to be responsible for this reduction. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Boron, nitrogen, and carbon ions were co-implanted in silicon wafers, and subsequently annealed. Infrared spectra show the formation of BN-rich buried layers. The presence of a band at 1375 cm−1 characteristic of boron nitride in a hexagonal configuration has been observed. Traces of the cubic phase formation were detected in some cases. Implanted samples exhibit a broad emission band about 550 nm. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract Automation by flow injection analysis with Spectrophotometric detection of the determination of total amino acids and proteins witho-phthalaldehyde is not straightforward. The use of spectrophotometry, instead of spectrofluorimetry, and of N-acetyl-L-cysteine, instead of the conventional mercaptoethanol is advantageous because of the lower variability of absorptivities with respect to fluorescence yields, and the larger stability of the derivatives. Under adequate working conditions and with leucine as reference, the procedure can be used for the evaluation of total amino acids. A similar procedure is proposed for the analysis of proteins in a sample. Limits of detection are ≈ 1 × 10−5 M for amino acids, and ≈ 1 × 10−6 M for proteins, respectively.

Notes: Abstract A synthetic hydrotalcite-like compound, [Al2Li(OH)6]2CO3 ·nH2O, was prepared by co-precipitation followed by hydrothermal treatment. The effects of hydrothermal treatment, time and temperature on crystallite size, crystal strain, and specific surface area have been studied. Differences in textural properties found by means of data obtained by X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and nitrogen adsorption techniques are discussed.

Notes: Abstract The synthesis of nickel aluminium hydroxypicrate, [Ni3Al(OH)8] (C6O7N3H2)·nH 2O, and lithium aluminium hydroxypicrate, [Al2Li(OH)6] (C6O7N3H2)·nH 2O by anion exchange is described. Picric acid and the corresponding hydroxycarbonates were used as starting materials. The new compounds were characterized by chemical analyses, electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results obtained indicate that both are hydrotalcite-like compounds where the picrate anion lies between the basic layers. The thermal decomposition of the compounds was studied by differential thermal and thermogravimetric analysis.

Notes: Summary The o-phthalaldehyde/N-acetyl-L-cysteine (OPA-NAC) reagent is applied to the spectrophotometric evaluation of the proteolytic activity of enzymes. The high stability of the OPA-NAC isoindoles makes a strict control of the time of reaction unnecessary. A mathematical expression is proposed to calculate proteolysis degrees, where the absorbance decrease of the OPA-NAC derivative of the protein itself during the hydrolysis process is taken into account. The method is applied to bovine serum albumine, caseine, lysozyme, lactoglobuline and protamine sulphate as substrates, and pronase, papaine, trypsin and chymotrypsin as enzymes.

Notes: Summary In eukaryotic organisms ferritin is a protein involved in the storage of iron. The occurrence of ferritin and its relationship to the effectiveness of the nitrogen-fixing activity have been previously studied during the early stages of the nodule development by biochemical methods. We have used immunocytochemistry techniques to determine the precise location of ferritin and the behavior of this protein along the nodule development. The major localization was found in plastids and amyloplasts of infected and uninfected cells of the three legume nodules studied. A decrease of the immunolabelling was observed in infected cells of lupin and soybean senescing nodules and in the senescent zone of indeterminate alfalfa nodules. In the cortex of soybean and lupin nodules, ferritin increased during nodule ageing and the immunogold particles were mainly located in crystalline structures. The putative role of ferritin and plastids during nodule development is discussed.

Notes: Abstract The kinetics of thermal dehydration of [Ni2Al(OH)6]2SO4.nH2O has been studied through the analysis of isothermal weight loss data. The results obtained seem to indicate that the process is governed by a diffusion mechanism up to anα value which is dependent on the temperature. An explanation is provided for this behaviour on the basis of the structural properties of the compound and the nature of the water loss.

Notes: Summary Two methods for the description of the retention behaviour of solutes in micellar liquid chromatography are compared. One of them divides the parameter space into triangular subspaces, fitting a different equation in each subspace. The second method makes use of a unique equation, valid in the whole parameter space. In both cases, equations of the type log k=f (μ, ϕ), and 1/k=f (μ, ϕ), (μ and ϕ are the concentration of surfactant and alcohol, respectively), were used to describe the retention. The use of the hyperbolic function, 1/k=c0+c1μ+c3μϕ, to describe the whole parameter space yielded the best prediction. When a small portion of the parameter space was modelled, a simpler hyperbolic function, lacking the μϕ term often led to good results. The logarithmic equations usually gave the poorer predictions.

Notes: Summary An HPLC procedure is described for the determination of caffeine in pharmaceutical preparations. A Spherisorb octadecylsilane ODS-2 C18 analytical column and spectrophotometric detection at 273 nm were used. The chromatographic behaviour of caffeine with different micellar eluents containing sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS) is described. The determination of caffeine in pharmaceutical preparations was performed by use of a mobile phase containing 0.05 M sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS) and 1.5% propanol at pH7. At a 6.0 μg mL−1 concentration level the peak area and peak height repeatability were 2.6 and 2.4%, respectively. The application of the proposed method to the analysis of five pharmaceutical formulations, using peak heights as the dependent variable, gave recoveries between 85 and 104% of the values declared by the manufacturers. The proposed procedure for the determination of caffeine is rapid (15 min per sample), reliable and free from interferences.
