    Description: MarsiteCruise was undertaken in October/November 2014 in the Sea of Marmara to gain detailed insight into the fate of fluids migrating within the sedimentary column and partially released into the water column. The overall objective of the project was to achieve a more global understanding of cold-seep dynamics in the context of a major active strike-slip fault. Five remotely operated vehicle (ROV) dives were performed at selected areas along the North Anatolian Fault and inherited faults. To efficiently detect, select and sample the gas seeps, we applied an original procedure. It combines sequentially (1) the acquisition of ship-borne multibeam acoustic data from the water column prior to each dive to detect gas emission sites and to design the tracks of the ROV dives, (2) in situ and real-time Raman spectroscopy analysis of the gas stream, and (3) onboard determination of molecular and isotopic compositions of the collected gas bubbles. The in situ Raman spectroscopy was used as a decision-making tool to evaluate the need for continuing with the sampling of gases from the discovered seep, or to move to another one. Push cores were gathered to study buried carbonates and pore waters at the surficial sediment, while CTD-Rosette allowed collecting samples to measure dissolved-methane concentration within the water column followed by a comparison with measurements from samples collected with the submersible Nautile during the Marnaut cruise in 2007. Overall, the visited sites were characterized by a wide diversity of seeps. CO2- and oil-rich seeps were found at the westernmost part of the sea in the Tekirdag Basin, while amphipods, anemones and coral populated the sites visited at the easternmost part in the Cinarcik Basin. Methane-derived authigenic carbonates and bacterial mats were widespread on the seafloor at all sites with variable size and distributions. The measured methane concentrations in the water column were up to 377 μmol, and the dissolved pore-water profiles indicated the occurrence of sulfate depleting processes accompanied with carbonate precipitation. The pore-water profiles display evidence of biogeochemical transformations leading to the fast depletion of seawater sulfate within the first 25-cm depth of the sediment. These results show that the North Anatolian Fault and inherited faults are important migration paths for fluids for which a significant part is discharged into the water column, contributing to the increase of methane concentration at the bottom seawater and favoring the development of specific ecosystems

    Notes: We propose the existence of a major right-lateral transform fault which we call the Boso transform fault. It is related to the Sagami trough, a portion of the Philippine Sea plate boundary south of the Kanto area (central Japan). This Boso transform fault is the result of shear partitioning due to oblique subduction and has delimited a Boso sliver for 2 Myr. The rate of motion is estimated at 16 mm yr−1 and the total offset at 30 km. The fault cuts through the Miura and Boso peninsulas onland, where it has a multiple surface expression roughly along the limit of a steeply dipping Miocene ophiolitic body. These subaerial faults have been identified as active, and their cumulated rate of slip across the Miura peninsula can be estimated to be greater than 12 mm yr−1, in reasonable agreement with the above estimate. We propose that the slip on the Boso transform fault was responsible for two large (M = 7.0 and 7.5) aftershocks which occurred on the second day after the 1923 great Kanto earthquake. This explains the unusual duration of the aftershock sequence, and the large magnitudes of some of the aftershocks.

    Notes: Abstract Dense populations of bivalves, primarily Calyptogena sp., were observed at cold seeps of the Nankai Trough. Bacterial input to the sediment was estimated through determination of phospholipid ester-linked fatty acid (PLFA) and DNA profiles. Results indicated a bacterial biomass of 109 cells (g dry wt)-1 while individual fatty acid profiles revealed a predominance of monounsaturated fatty acids, mainly 18:1 isomers. The presence of these fatty acids can be interpreted to reflect a response to low temperature and a predominance of psychrophilic bacteria. DNA fragments encoding bacterial ribosomal RNA small-subunit sequences (16S rDNA) were amplified by the polymerase chain reaction method using DNA extracted directly from the sediment samples. From the sequencing results, at least 19 kinds of bacterial 16S rDNAs related to mostly the Proteobacteria and a few gram-positive bacteria were identified. These results suggest that the bacterial community in the Nankai Trough sediments consists of mainly bacteria belonging to the Proteobacteria γ, ε, and δ subdivisions. Bacteria belonging to the ε and δ subdivisions, which are known to include epibiont and sulfate reducing bacteria, respectively, were mostly detected in the sediment obtained from inside the area of the Calyptogena community, and the δ-Proteobacteria may function to supply reduced sulfur to bacterial endosymbionts of Calyptogena.

    Notes: Abstract The e.e.g. was recorded from the left and right parietal and temporal regions of the scalps of 23 normal subjects while they were mentally at rest and then while they were executing tasks intended to engage, firstly, their dominant cerebral hemispheres, and secondly then their nondominant hemispheres. In each of the alpha and gamma frequency bands, 43 features of the e.e.g. expressed in terms of average power densities, coefficients of power density variation, coherencies and phases were calculated for each of the subjects. A method of separating the features which were related to the nature of the mental task from those which were related only to the mental workload represented by each of the tasks is presented. Of the features considered, many were found to be workload related, but only five, namely a power density variance, a right to left power ratio, an anterior to posterior phase angle and two coherency ratios, showed task-dependent behaviour. In this latter group, only two features point to the lateralisation of verbal and spatial cognitive processes to the dominant and nondominant cerebral hemispheres. The problem of the confounding of cerebral and mygenic effects and possible bias in the results owing to this effect is discussed.
