    Abstract: This book addresses the recent trends and clinical research being reported in last 5 to 10 years in the field of nasal drug delivery systems. In recent years, interest in using nasal passage as drug absorption site has received increased attention from formulation scientists. Nasal passages, even though a small surface area of the body as compared to other absorption passage such as Gastrointestinal tract or skin, show significant possibility for drug absorption at a quicker rate. There is also a possibility of delivering drugs to the brain using this passage and targeting drugs through the nasal passage. The book has 19 chapters addressing various aspects of nasal drug delivery systems such as an overview of anatomy and physiology of the nasal passage from a drug delivery point of view to global market opportunities for nasal drug delivery. In between, it addresses various aspects of nasal drug delivery. There are very few titles exclusively dedicated to nasal drug delivery, covering the formulation and developmental aspects, and addressing the challenges and solutions. The primary audiences for the book are graduate students in field of medicine, pharmacy and also various researchers who are working in the area of nasal drug delivery in addition to students who are specializing in field of medicine in ENT. This book provides comprehensive information on all the aspects related to the nasal drug delivery of various drug molecules.

    Notes: Electro-optical absorption measurements have been made on four model nitroaromatics to determine the effect of twisting of the donor–acceptor single bond on the charge-transfer characteristics in the Franck–Condon excited states. Observed ground- and excited-state dipole moments of nitromesitylene, which has been treated experimentally as the nonplanar analogue of planar nitrobenzene, indicate that electronic excitation of twisted nitrobenzene results in a nearly full unit charge transfer from donor (benzene) to the acceptor (nitro) group (Δμ=18.3 D). On the other hand, in planar nitrobenzene and nitronaphthalene the charge transfer is more delocalized over the whole molecular skeleton, resulting in normal changes in dipole moment (Δμ=5–10 D). In the analogous anthracene system, i.e., 9-nitroanthracene, the charge transfer upon electronic excitation is extremely low (Δμ=1.7 D), which is reflected by its very small change in the dipole moment. Therefore, it is evident that the charge-transfer processes in the twisted molecules are quite different for different aromatic ring systems. Simple molecular-orbital calculations satisfactorily explain the reason for such differences on the basis of their highest occupied molecular-orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular-orbital (LUMO) characteristics. Transition moment directions have also been obtained experimentally and compared with the theoretically predicted directions based on the symmetry properties of the HOMO and LUMO. Agreement is found in all cases studied.

    Notes: A distributed database system allows concurrent execution of transactions from multiple users at multiple locations. This paper presents a general scheme of including the effect of interaction between such transactions in the design process of distributed databases. This scheme allows the decision maker to choose the most appropriate design for a distributed database. The interaction effect is a consequence of concurrency control procedures and contention for system resources. Prior research has not included all components of the interaction effect in the design process. A separate module, called an interaction module, was built to measure the interaction effect using a comprehensive simulation model of a general purpose relational distributed database management system (DBMS). The interaction module can be interfaced with any distributed database design system as an add-on module so that the interaction effect can be included in the design process. A detailed example demonstrates the use of the interaction module in the decision-making process. Experiments conducted using the module show that the interaction effect can be significant and that it can affect the choice of the design. Experiments were also conducted to measure the sensitivity of design choices under changing input conditions.

The optimal design of such a system requires integration of computers of varying power and a strategy for capacity loading. This paper considers the problem of capacity planning and capacity loading of a distributed computer system as a hierarchy of decisions. A linear programming model is developed for the initial capacity planning problem. A loading model that accounts for variations in arrival and processing rates of the jobs in a dynamic environment is developed to support the operations.

    Notes: The design of distributed computer systems (DCSs) requires compromise among several conflicting objectives. For instance, high system availability conflicts with low cost which in turn conflicts with quick response time. This paper presents an approach, based on multi-criteria decision-making techniques, to arrive at a good design in this multiobjective environment. An interactive procedure is developed to support the decision making of system designers. Starting from an initial solution, the procedure presents a sequence of non-dominated vectors to designers, allowing them to explore systematically alternative possibilities on the path to a final design. The model user has control over trade-offs among different design objectives. This paper focuses on the details of the mathematical model used to provide decision support. Accordingly, a formulation of DCS design as a multicriteria decision problem is developed. The exchange search heuristic used to generate nondominated solutions also is presented. We argue that multicriteria models provide a more realistic formulation of the DCS design problem than the single-criterion models used widely in the literature. While obtaining a clear definition of design objectives (single or multiple) is an important activity, by explicitly acknowledging the trade-offs among multiple objectives in the design process, our methodology is more likely to produce a better overall design than methods addressing a single criterion in isolation.
