Description:
Recent observations on Harpalus griseus: is there a trend (Coleoptera: Carabidae)?\nHarpalus (Pseudoophonus) griseus is reported in literature to be a rare ground beetle in the\nNetherlands. Recently, many specimens of this species were observed or collected by means of\npitfall traps, window traps and light traps. Besides a number of observations from heathland\nand drift sand areas\nin the Veluwe region, H. griseus was collected in several agricultural and anthropogenic\nhabitats around Wageningen. Based on our recent observations the species seems to be more\neurytopic than previously thought. The total number of records shows a remarkable increase\nduring the last decade, while the distribution area seems to decrease. It is clear that, due to\ndifferent sampling intensities and collecting methods, it is impossible to successfully interpret\nany trend. This is not only true for H. griseus: time trend analysis for all carabids and species of\nmany other invertebrate taxa, will be problematic in the absence of a valid procedure to correct\nfor sampling intensity.
