    Notes: Abstract We present a subgradient algorithm for minimizing the maximum of a finite collection of functions. It is assumed that each function is the sum of a finite collection of basic convex functions and that the number of different subgradient sets associated with nondifferentiable points of each basic function is finite on any bounded set. Problems belonging to this class include the linear approximation problem and both the minimax and minisum problems of location theory. Convergence of the algorithm to an epsilon-optimal solution is proven and its effectiveness is demonstrated by solving a number of location problems and linear approximation problems.

    Notes: Abstract Soft X-rays (0.1–0.8 keV) from the region including theϱ Oph dark cloud were observed with the SAS-3 low-energy X-ray telescope. No X-ray absorption by the cloud was observed. This indicates that the diffuse component of soft X-rays in this region is mostly from the foreground of theϱ Oph cloud which is located at a distance of 160–200 pc.

Benders, which was generalized to nonlinear programming by Geoffrion, is further generalized to linearly constrained variational inequality problems. The conditions under which such a generalization is possible and appropriate are examined. An important area of application is the asymmetric traffic assignment problem for which the decomposition assumes a simple and effective form. A computational example demonstrates the algorithm.

    Notes: Abstract In order to trace a ray between known source and receiver locations in a perfectly elastic medium, the take-off angle must be determined, or equialently, the ray parameter. In a viscoelastic medium, the initial value of a second angle, the attenuation angle (the angle between the normal to the plane wavefront and the direction of maximum attenuation), must also be determined. There seems to be no agreement in the literature as to how this should be done. In computing anelastic synthetic seismograms, some authors have simply chosen arbitrary numerical values for the initial attenuation angle, resulting in different raypaths for different choices. There exists, however, a procedure in which the arbitrariness is not present, i.e., in which the raypath is uniquely determined. It consists of computing the value of the anelastic ray parameter for which the phase function is stationary (Fermat's principle). This unique value of the ray parameter gives unique values for the take-off and attenuation angles. The coordinates of points on these stationary raypaths are complex numbers. Such rays are known as complex rays. They have been used to study electromagnetic wave propagation in lossy media. However, ray-synthetic seismograms can be computed by this procedure without concern for the details of complex raypath coordinates. To clarify the nature of complex rays, we study two examples involving a ray passing through a vertically inhomogeneous medium. In the first example, the medium consists of a sequence of discrete homogeneous layers. We find that the coordinates of points on the ray are generally complex (other than the source and receiver points which are usually assumed to lie in real space), except for a ray which is symmetric about an axis down its center, in which case the center point of the ray lies in real space. In the second example, the velocity varies continuously and linearly with depth. We show that, in geneneral, the turning point of the ray lies in complex space (unlike the symmetric ray in the discrete layer case), except if the ratio of the velocity gradient to the complex frequency-dependent velocity at the surface is a real number. We also present a numerical example which demonstrates that the differences between parameters, such as arrival time and raypath angles, for the stationary ray and for rays computed by the above-mentioned arbitrary approaches can be substantial.

    Notes: Abstract A study of dayside auroral conjugacy has been done using the cleft/boundary layer auroral particle boundaries observed by the DMSP-F7 satellite in the southern hemisphere and the global UV auroral images taken by the Viking spacecraft in the northern hemisphere. The 22 events have been studied on the basis of an internal IGRF 1985 magnetic field; it is shown that there is a displacement of up to 4° in latitude from the conjugate points with the northern aurora appearing to be located poleward of the conjugate point. No local time dependence of the north-south auroral location difference was seen. The use of a more realistic magnetic field model for tracing field lines which incorporates the dipole tilt angle and Kp index, the Tsyganenko 1987 long model plus the IGRF 1985 internal magnetic field model, appears to organize the data better. Although with this external plus internal model some tracings did not close in the opposite hemisphere, 70% of those that did indicated satisfactory conjugacy. The study shows that the degree of auroral conjugacy is dependent upon the accuracy of the magnetic field model used to trace to the conjugate point, especially in the dayside region where the field lines can either go to the dayside magnetopause near the subsolar point or sweep all the way back to the flanks of the magnetotail. Also the discrepancy in the latitude of northern and southern aurora can be partially explained by the displacement of the neutral sheet (source region of the aurora) by the dipole tilt effect.

    Notes: Kevlar 29 fiber has been widely considered for the manufacture of very-long high-performance cables. Due to low transverse strength fiber-on-fiber rubbing leads to rapid deterioration. The usefulness of impregnating Kevlar 29 braids with resin to overcome this drawback has been evaluated by performing reverse bending fatigue tests. Braids of identical construction, one of them being impregnated with a polyurethane resin by a patented process, were fatigued to failure on a purpose-built rig under varying applied loads. Fatigue tests were also carried out to 30 percent and 50 percent of total braid life and residual strength values measured. It was found that high applied loads (∼50 percent of ultimate) lead to premature braid failure dominated by a creep mechanism. Both braids showed similar behavior, although the impregnated braid was superior. At low applied loads, however, where the failure mechanisms was dominated by wear or internal abrasion, it was seen that resin impregnation could increase braid life by a factor of four. Resin impregnation coupled with bending fatigue significantly stiffens braids, as was demonstrated by tensile testing up to braid failure.
