    Notes: Groups of common carp were acclimated to either 10°C or 28°C for 6 weeks. Fish were then exercised at 10°C or 20°C, and the critical swimming speed (fatigue velocity) was measured. At 10°C, cold-acclimated carp were capable of significantly higher swimming speeds. When exercised at 20°C. however, the situation was reversed, and warm-acclimated carp exhibited improved swimming ability. These results provide direct evidence that acclimation of the contractile proteins is beneficial across a wide temperature range. Following acclimation to low environmental temperatures the critical swimming speed exhibited a Q10 of only 1.1 for the temperature range 10–20°C. compared to a value of 2.9 for fish acclimated to the higher temperature.

    Notes: Myofibrillar ATPase activity was measured in the epaxial musculature of five freshwater species of fish acclimated to extremes of temperature within their tolerance ranges. Changes in the enzyme activity were apparent in carp, tench and roach, cold acclimated fish (10°C) having higher enzyme activity levels than hot acclimated fish (28°C). Such changes were not apparent in eels or brook trout. Alteration of the enzyme activity took less than 4 weeks, and was totally reversible. This suggests that seasonal adaptation to environmental temperatures is possible, thus maintaining locomotory efficiency.

    Notes: Abstract The temperature dependence of the rates of protein synthesis in the red and white skeletal muscle of the carp (Cyprinus carpio) was measured using a method which involved a single injection of tritiated phenylalanine. Plasma and muscle-free phenylalanine quickly reached a plateau level at all temperatures. During the plateau phase the incorporation of label into protein was liner. Muscle from fish previously acclimated to either a low temperature (8°C) or a high temperature (28°C), showed marked differences in the rates of protein synthesis. The results show that cold acclimation is associated with significantly higher rates of protein synthesis (p〈0.001) in both red and white muscle. Arrhenius activation energies, derived from the rates of protein synthesis at the different experimental temperatures, were similar for both red and white muscle in fish acclimated to warm or cold temperatures. Measurements for both acclimated groups over the temperature range 8–34°C showed that the activation energy for the process of protein synthesis was 86.7 kJ/mol and 78.7 kJ/mol for the red and white muscle respectively.

    Notes: Summary 1. Parameters of the isometric twitch were measured for the pectoral fin adductor muscles of goldfishCarassius auratus acclimated to 10°C or 28°C. Contractile parameters and myofibrillar ATPase activities were measured at a range of temperatures. The muscle fibre composition was measured for transverse sections of pectoral fin adductor muscles from goldfish acclimated to 10°C or 28°C. 2. Cold acclimation was associated with an increase in the proportion of oxidative fibre types. Muscles from cold acclimated fish had an average of 23% more red and pink fibres than muscles from warm acclimated fish. 3. Cold acclimated fin muscles also possessed a significantly higher myofibrillar ATPase activity than warm acclimated fin muscles. This difference was greatest at lower measurement temperatures. 4. Muscles from cold acclimated fish were able to maintain quicker rates of contraction and relaxation at low environmental temperatures, as shown by the possession of significantly shorter response times. 5. The temperature dependence (Q10) of the isometric twitch contratile parameters for fin muscle from warm or cold acclimated goldfish was similar over the temperature range 20–30°C. However, over the temperature range 6–15°C fin muscles from warm acclimated goldfish possessed consistently higher Q10's.

    Description: Animals change the strategy that they use to select breeding sites at the spatial scales of habitat, patch, and microhabitat. In this regard, breeding site fidelity is expected to vary according to environmental predictability, which, in turn, is expected to differ between each spatial scale. However, whether or not animals change their degree of site fidelity at different spatial scales remains unclear. We captured and released males of the terrestrial frog Pseudophryne bibronii into alternative patches within a breeding habitat and determined the extent to which site fidelity influenced individual nest-site choice. We found that males tended to return to their original patch rather than resettle in an alternative patch. However, males were unlikely to return to their original nest sites within the patch. We suggest that site fidelity in this species may be scale dependent because information from previous breeding seasons can predict the quality of patches, but not nest sites. This behavioral variation is consistent with a hypothetical relationship between spatial scale and environmental predictability, which may have important implications for decision-making processes that extend over multiple spatial scales.

    Description: Radon anomalies are commonly observed prior to dynamic failure in the crust and are interpreted as cracking of the medium, thus attracting considerable attention in understanding the precursory phenomena of earthquakes and volcanic activity. In this study we have compared the starting radon emissions from low porosity crystalline lava (phonolite) samples with those from damaged and failed samples. The damaged sample was loaded up to just beyond the end of the linear elastic phase, as evidenced by the output of AE energy, the increase in total porosity and a decrease in P-wave and S-wave velocity relative to the intact sample. Whereas, the failed sample showed deformation behaviour characteristically brittle with increasing values of AE output and porosity as the sample approached macroscopic failure. Radon measurements have evidenced that dilatational microcracking of deformed sample produced no significant variation in radon emanation with respect to the intact sample. In contrast, after macroscopic failure, radon emanation drastically increased. Therefore, major finding from this study is that, in the case of low porosity and relatively high strength crystalline lavas, the development of a macroscopic fracture provides new large exhaling surface resulting in a substantial increase in radon emission rate.
