Notes: Summary The interrelation between divergence and flutter on one hand and auto-parametric resonance on the other is investigated with the aid of an example. This is done by taking account of compressibility in a model of a cantilever under the action of a follower force. It is found that divergence and flutter emerge formally as special cases of instabilities which are known as subharmonic and combination resonances, respectively.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary In this paper critical loads of columns are calculated. The load is assumed to be tangential to the axis of the column. Two types of loading are considered: a uniform, compressive load and a linearly varying, compressive load. All boundary conditions of technical interest are taken into account.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The influence of the mass distribution and of the sequence of the loading is investigated for an elastic column. The column is assumed to be clamped at the base and free at the upper end. The load consists of one force acting in a fixed direction and of another force which maintains its orientation with respect to the deforming column.

Notes: Summary The propagation of elastic and plastic waves in arbitrary spatial trusses under impact loading is considered in this paper. Particular attention is payed to the derivation of the equations which are needed to determine the distribution of the waves at the pins. Subsequently, the equations are written compactly as a matrix equation which is solved numerically. Various examples illustrate the method.

Notes: Summary In this paper, a new theory of the adaptive growth of biological materials is presented. The theory is derived from the basic laws of continuum mechanics. The material is described as a classical mixture of solid material and fluid. It will be shown that several well-known models of the adaptive growth are embedded in this more general theory. In addition, it is clarified on which material assumptions these models are based. Finally, a solution procedure for the new theory is developed, and several examples are given.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The behaviour of elastic or plastic waves at the joints of trusses is investigated. The distribution of the waves is described with the aid of distribution factors which are not only dependent on the geometry of the joint but also on the type of the waves and on the state of stress in the bars in front of the incoming wave. Two illustrative examples are given. They show that an analysis based on the assumption of a rigidplastic material may lead to results which are quantitatively or even qualitatively erroneous.

Notes: Summary In this paper, equations which describe the propagation of elastic-plastic waves of combined stress resultants in a Timoshenko beam under symmetrical bending and tension or compression are derived. It is assumed that the beam material exhibits a weak work-hardening and strain-rate independent behaviour. The normality rule is postulate for the plastic strain rates of an infinitesimal volume element. The wave propagation is described by a hyperbolic system of differential equations, the state variables of which are the stress resultants and the strain rates of an infinitesimal beam element. It is shown that the actual distribution of shear stress in the plastic range need not be taken into account by means of a plastic shear correction factor.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The propagation of plastic waves in pin-jointed trusses is investigated theoretically with the aid of a simple bilinear constitutive law. The results of the analysis are compared with experimental results and good agreement is found. In addition, it is shown that the masses of the bars can be considered to be concentrated in the joints which leads to a considerable simplification of the analysis.
