Notes: This paper is concerned with phase decomposition of a supersaturated solid solution in a two-dimensional system. We have investigated the behavior of numerical solutions to the Cahn equation including an elastic strain energy term in such a way as to follow the time evolution of composition modulation by computer. It is found that in our numerical experiment the introduction of the elastic strain energy gives no anisotropic effect on the crystallographic direction of the composition modulation, but leads to the decrease in the decomposition rate and quantity at the equilibrium state. Again, it is demonstrated that for a high solute alloy system inside the spinodal region a large circular precipitate is formed at the center of the flat matrix through a very complicated process accompanied with the aggregation and annihilation of particles. The results so obtained are discussed from a numerical point of view.

Notes: The diffusion equation which was originally derived by Cahn has been found to give various numerical solutions depending upon whether the average composition exists inside or outside spinodal regions. We have investigated the behavior of numerical solutions to the equation in a two-dimensional system in such a way as to pursue the time evolution of composition modulation by computer. Again, the wavenumber method has been adopted. In this paper, it is demonstrated how the growth of a composition modulation proceeds according to the difference in the average composition, and in the initial perturbation corresponding to the composition amplitude. The results so obtained are discussed from a numerical point of view.

Notes: Summary A recently developed extension of the upper-bound theorem is applied to the problem of rigid/plastic deformation in case where the surface configuration of the concerned body is previously unknown. By assuming a simple velocity field the strip rolling process is analysed by considering the free deformation zones in front of, and behind the roll gap. The results so obtained show that the transitional plastic deformation zone exists only in front of the roll gap without any bulge. Furthermore, we find that this zone becomes larger with increase of the strain sensitivity as well as the strain rate sensitivity of material.

Notes: Summary The rigid-plastic finite element method is applied to the analysis of the three-dimensional deformation behaviour, in particular the forming of edge lamination during the multi-pass hot roughing process of aluminium. the calculation is carried out for various rolling conditions and reduction schedules, and their influence on the edge lamination is examined. The results suggest that the crop loss due to the edge lamination can be reduced by increasing the roll diameter, the reduction per pass and the initial width of the slab.

Notes: Summary A recently proposed method to predict the forming limit of sheet metals is applied to the problem of bore expanding. Axisymmetric bore-expanding processes of various aluminium alloy sheets are simulated by the rigid-plastic finite element method. From the calculated histories of stress and strain, the forming limit, i.e. the fracture initiation, is predicted by means of the ductile fracture criterion. The comparison with the experimental results shows that the fracture initiation site and the critical punch stroke are successfully predicted by the present approach.

Notes: Summary  A criterion for ductile fracture is introduced in the finite element simulation of sheet metal forming. From the calculated histories of stress and strain in each element, the fracture initiation site and the critical stroke are predicted by means of the ductile fracture criterion. The calculations are carried out for axisymmetric stretch forming of various aluminium alloy sheets and their laminates clad by mild steel sheets. The predictions so obtained are compared with experimental observations. The results show that the combination of the finite element simulation and the ductile fracture criterion enables the prediction of forming limit in a wide range of sheet metals.

Notes: Abstract Semi-quantitative investigation is made of hazard expected from an asteroidal impact in the Pacific. An impact ofd (diameter) = 200 m asteroid has a probability of hitting somewhere in the Pacific once in 15000 y. By carrying out a Monte Carlo simulation, such an impact, on average, is shown to create a tsunami as high as 16, 14, 15, and 21 m at Japan, Taiwan, Shanghai and Hawaii, respectively. Wooden houses, stone and brick houses, and reinforced concrete buildings are likely to be demolished by tsunamis of height 2, 7 and 20 m respectively. Thus, there is a probability of 1% or so that most of the artificial constructions on the coast lines of the Pacific be destroyed in the next century by an asteroidal impact.

Notes: Summary In order to predict the material temperature throughout the hot rolling process of aluminium, a numerical model is proposed in a theoretical as well as simple way. Using the model, the possibility of the improvement in productivity by reforming the finishing mill arrangement is examined under aspect of the control of material temperature. The results so obtained show the positive effect of increasing the number of finishing mills on the productivity.
