    Notes: Abstract We consider the torsional deformation of a non-homogeneous infinite elastic cylinder slackened by an external circular cut. The shear modulus of the material of the cylinder is assumed to vary with the radial coordinate by a power law. It is assumed that the lateral surface of the cylinder as well as the surface of the cut are free of stress. The main object of this study is to establish the effect of the non-homogeneity on the stress intensity factor at the tip of the cut. The problem leads to a pair of dual series relations, the solution of which is governed by a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind with a symmetric kernel. This equation is solved numerically by reducing it to an algebraic system. It is concluded that for any degree of non-homogeneity and for D, the relative depth of the cut, greater than 0.6, the cylinder may be replaced by a half-space. However, as the non-homogeneity increases, D decreases.

The rest of each surface is kept stress free. Using the Hankel integral transform, this problem is shown to lead to two pairs of dual integral equations, the solution of which is governed by two simultaneous Fredholm integral equations of the second kind. The latter may be solved either numerically or by iteration (in the case of sufficiently large values of the layer's thickness compared to the maximum of the radii of the circles and for β=0). The solutions for some particular cases previously investigated are recovered by assigning specific numerical values to physical and geometrical parameters. Expressions for some quantities of physical importance, such as the torques applied on the two surfaces and the stress intensity factors, are obtained for the two surfaces and some numerical values are displayed graphically.

    Description: Numerical simulations of reacting and non-reacting flows within a scramjet combustor configuration experimentally mapped at the University of Virginia s Scramjet Combustion Facility (operating with Configuration A ) are described in this paper. Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) and hybrid Large Eddy Simulation / Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (LES / RANS) methods are utilized, with the intent of comparing essentially blind predictions with results from non-intrusive flow-field measurement methods including coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS), hydroxyl radical planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF), stereoscopic particle image velocimetry (SPIV), wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS), and focusing Schlieren. NC State's REACTMB solver was used both for RANS and LES / RANS, along with a 9-species, 19- reaction H2-air kinetics mechanism by Jachimowski. Inviscid fluxes were evaluated using Edwards LDFSS flux-splitting scheme, and the Menter BSL turbulence model was utilized in both full-domain RANS simulations and as the unsteady RANS portion of the LES / RANS closure. Simulations were executed and compared with experiment at two equivalence ratios, PHI = 0.17 and PHI = 0.34. Results show that the PHI = 0.17 flame is hotter near the injector while the PHI = 0.34 flame is displaced further downstream in the combustor, though it is still anchored to the injector. Reactant mixing was predicted to be much better at the lower equivalence ratio. The LES / RANS model appears to predict lower overall heat release compared to RANS (at least for PHI = 0.17), and its capability to capture the direct effects of larger turbulent eddies leads to much better predictions of reactant mixing and combustion in the flame stabilization region downstream of the fuel injector. Numerical results from the LES/RANS model also show very good agreement with OH-PLIF and SPIV measurements. An un-damped long-wave oscillation of the pre-combustion shock train, which caused convergence problems in some RANS simulations, was also captured in LES / RANS simulations, which were able to accommodate its effects accurately.

    Description: This project focus on the implementation of the Warren-Hassan transition / turbulence model (Journal of Aircraft, Vol. 35, No. 5) into the NASA code CFL3D and its testing for multi-element airfoils in landing configuration at different angles of attack. The Warren-Hassan transition model solves an evolution equation for a kinetic energy characteristic of non-turbulent fluctuations. This is combined with an empirical estimate of the frequency of the most amplified first-mode disturbance to yield an expression for an eddy viscosity characteristic of non-turbulent fluctuations. This is combined with the k - zeta model for fully turbulent flow to yield a unified approach capable of predicting both transition onset and extent. Blending of the non-turbulent and turbulent components of the model is accomplished by an intermittency function based on the work of Dhawan and Narasimha (Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Vol. 3, No. 4).

    Description: This paper discusses the progress of work which began in mid-2004 sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Test & Evaluation/Science & Technology (T&E/S&T) Program. The purpose of the work is to improve the state of the art of CFD capabilities for predicting the effects of the test media on the flameholding characteristics in scramjet engines. The program has several components including the development of advance algorithms and models for simulating engine flowpaths as well as a fundamental experimental and diagnostic development effort to support the formulation and validation of the mathematical models. The paper will provide details of current work involving the development of phenomenological models for Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes codes, large-eddy simulation techniques and reduced-kinetics models. Experiments that will provide data for the modeling efforts will also be described, along with with the associated nonintrusive diagnostics used to collect the data.

    Description: An organized knowledge structure or knowledge base plays a vital role in retaining knowledge where data are processed and organized so that machines can understand. Instructive text (iText) consists of a set of instructions to accomplish a task or operation. Hence, iText includes a group of texts having a title or name of the task or operation and step-by-step instructions on how to accomplish the task. In the case of iText, storing only entities and their relationships with other entities does not always provide a solution for capturing knowledge from iTexts as it consists of parameters and attributes of different entities and their action based on different operations or procedures and the values differ for every individual operation or procedure for the same entity. There is a research gap in iTexts that created limitations to learn about different operations, capture human experience and dynamically update knowledge for every individual operation or instruction. This research presents a knowledge base for capturing and retaining knowledge from iTexts existing in operational documents. From each iTexts, small pieces of knowledge are extracted and represented as nodes linked to one another in the form of a knowledge network called the human experience semantic network (HESN). HESN is the crucial component of our proposed knowledge base. The knowledge base also consists of domain knowledge having different classified terms and key phrases of the specific domain.
