Notes: Abstract  Using Green's function method, an analytical, closed form solution for the problem of transient mass diffusion into a two-layer medium is found. Two problems are considered; composite slab and composite cylinder. Carbon diffusion into slab composed of Ferrite steel and Austenite steel in perfect contact is investigated. From the results, the time required for carbon concentration to reach a certain level is estimated.

Notes: Abstract The level scheme of153Eu was investigated by observing the gamma-rays following theβ −-decay of the 47 h153Sm using a high purity Ge(HPGe) detector and a Ge(Li)-Nal(Tl) fast-slow coincidence spectrometer. The energies and relative intensities of about fifty six gamma-ray transitions were determined. Five of them at energies of 124.91, 431.65, 443.24, 487.75 and 623.73 keV were observed and confirmed for the first time in the present singles and/or gamma-gamma coincidence measurements. These new transitions could be fitted into a proposed level scheme of153Eu. Theβ −-decay branching ratios as well as the log (ft) values were obtained.

Notes: Abstract In this work, the most important limitations for qualitative and quantitative analysis using reactor neutrons for activation are reviewed. Each limitation is discussed using different examples of activated samples. Photopeak estimation, nuclear reactions interference and neutron flux measurements are taken into consideration. Solutions for high accuracy evaluation in neutron activation analysis applications are given.

Notes: Abstract A total of 17Leishmania isolates, 6 of them isolated from antimony-resistant patients, were collected in the Sudan and tested for their sensitivity to sodium stibogluconate (Pentostam) as promastigotes. Six of those isolates were tested as amastigotes infecting a murine macrophage cell line. The results indicated that the conventional promastigote screening assay did not correlate with the clinical picture, whereas the amastigote/macrophage system produced results that pertained to the in vivo responses to the drug. A laboratory-generated resistant strain ofL. major was adapted to grow at a high concentration of Pentostam (1000 μg/ml) as promastigotes but was quite sensitive to the drug at much lower concentrations in the amastigote/(macrophage system (20μg/ml), thus suggesting that Pentostam's inhibitory action is mediated through the macrophage rather than through a direct toxic effect exerted on the parasite.

Notes: Abstract Through the use of Instrumental Neutron Activation Analysis (INAA), zinc concentration was determined in kernels resulted on plants of six drought-resistant rice mutant lines fertilized with zinc sulphate. It was found that zinc fertilization increased zinc residues in the kernels with varying concentrations depending on the line, each line reacted and responded to zinc independently. Zinc content in the kernels ranged from 5.63 to 91.4 ppm in the unfertilized control lines. This range was enlarged due to zinc fertilization of the plants to be from 93.51 to 554.53 ppm. It was also noticed that zinc fertilization increased seed heaviness in varying degrees depending on the line itself. This increase may be due to the increase in kernel thickness rather than in kernel width or length.

Notes: Abstract A simulated borehole sonde has been assembled, with an aluminium casing of 70 cm in length and 12 cm in inner diameter. It contains a 5 Ci Pu−Be source with a neutron yield of about 5.45·106+10% n·cm−2·s−1, a shadow shield, and a Hp Ge detector of 15% efficiency and 2 keV FWHM for the 1.33 MeV line of60Co. Evaluations of the assembly through the dependence of thermal neutron flux on water content, matrix composition and borehole configuration have been performed. Accordingly, thermal neutron flux distributions have been measured around the sonde and inside the ore in both the simulated dry and water filled borehole. From these measurements one could estimate that the effective moderating thickness of water is about 4 cm, while the volume matrix of the ore to be investigated by this assembly is a slab of about 8 cm width and a height of about 15 cm. It also follows that the uranium-thorium ore analysis method described in this work may become important as a field neutron activation technique.

Notes: The corrosion inhibition of mild steel by some naturally occuring substance was evaluated in absence and presence of 600 and 1200 mg H2S/l in 3% NaCl aqueous solution and pH of 3 and temperature of 25 °C. These naturally occurring substance included the water extracts, coumarines and fatty matters extracts of some Egyptian plants. These plants included:(1) Nigella Sativa (Family Ranunculacease) (Extract (1), 2) Coriandrum Sativum (Family Umbelliferea) (Extract II), 3) Ricinus communis (Family Euphorbiaceae) (Extract III). The galvanostatic anodic and cathodic polarization measurements were used for studying the corrosion behavior of mild steel and evaluation of the percentage inhibition of the undertesting extracts of these three plants and also preparation of fatty matters and coumarin fractions were mentioned.

Notes: The inhibition of mild steel corrosion/in 0.5 M HCl solution by amphoteric surfactants (which contain both an anionic and a cationic moiety in the same molecule) of general formula: (R alkyl group of C10, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 17) is shown to confirm Langmuir's adsorption isotherms. At a given concentration of surfactants, the inhibiting action increases with the increase of carbon chain length. The influence of both inductive and steric hindrance effects of methylene groups in -R on the inhibition efficiency has also been mentioned.
