Abstract: This book provides an introduction to ocean sciences that is engaging, evocative and accessible to non-experts interested in marine geoscience, while sparking readers' interest in important unsolved mysteries in marine science. The scope of the book is quite broad, but focuses on the physical ocean and its geological evolution, including the author's experiences working as an oceanographer over the last thirty years. Across ten chapters, the book traces the origins of the ocean from its formation 4 billion years ago, reviews the discoveries of the theory of plate tectonics, the ice ages and the great ocean conveyor, and discusses seafloor features (canyons, seamounts, trenches, abyssal plains, etc.), how they formed and their current environmental issues. The book concludes with a prognosis for the future ocean we might expect with global climate change and other human impacts. .

In:  Supplement to: Sedwick, Peter; Harris, Peter Townsend; Robertson, Lisette G; McMurtry, Gary M; Cremer, Maximilian D (2001): Holocene sediment records from the continental shelf of Mac. Robertson Land, East Antarctica. Paleoceanography, 16(2), 212-225, https://doi.org/10.1029/2000PA000504
    Publication Date: 2023-05-12
Description: Geochemical records are presented for five sediment cores from basins on the continental shelf of Mac. Robertson Land, East Antarctica. The cores contain 2-4 m thick sequences of hemipelagic, siliceous mud and ooze (SMO) deposited under seasonally open marine conditions. The inner and middle shelf SMO sequences are massive dark olive green material, whereas the outer shelf SMO sequences are dark olive material interspersed with light olive green layers ~1-10 cm thick. The biogenic material is dominated by marine diatoms including Fragilariopsis curta, Fragilariopsis cylindrus, and Chaetoceros spp. in the dark-colored SMO and Corethron criophilum in the light-colored layers. Radiocarbon dates suggest that the cores provide continuous accumulation records extending from 〈 1 kyr before present (B.P.) back as far as 4-15 kyr B.P., with estimated accumulation rates of 0.07-5 mm/yr. The three core records from the middle and outer shelf suggest six episodes of increased accumulation of biogenic material at ~5.5 kyr B.P. (all three cores), 1, 2, and 6.2 kyr B.P. (two of the three cores), and 3.8 and 10.8 kyr B.P. (one core), most of which coincide with Corethron layers. We interpret these features as the result of enhanced diatom production over the outer shelf, possibly related to climatic warm periods. The absence of such features in the inner shelf core records is thought to reflect a relatively constant level of seasonal diatom production in adjacent waters maintained by a coastal polynya.

Notes: Numerous governments have introduced regulations governing the use of mobile (cellular) telephones while driving. Despite significant research into the “objective” risks, there is relatively little research into risk perceptions either in relation to other in-car distractions or with respect to the factors underlying such perceptions. The current article reports on two studies addressing these issues. Study 1 (N= 199) found that whereas the use of hand-held sets is seen as one of the riskiest activities to perform while driving, the risks of using a hands-free kit are perceived to be relatively small. Study 2 (N= 1,320) found that nearly half of all drivers in the sample with a mobile phone reported having used it while driving and that, overall, the probability of having an accident was perceived to be less for oneself than for one's peers, indicating an optimistic bias. Two factors underpinned risk perceptions, “impact” including perceived severity and equitability, and “controllability” including immediacy, detectability, and probability. While higher “impact” scores were associated with increased preferences for restrictions on the use of hand-held mobiles while driving, the “controllability” scores moderated this relationship such that when perceived “controllability” was low, restriction preferences were high irrespective of perceived “impact.” However, when “controllability” was high, restriction preferences remained high when “impact” was high but were low when “impact” was low. Given the growing number of in-car technological innovations, it is suggested that regulators act strategically, rather than finding themselves developing a series of “hazard-specific” regulations, which may ultimately lack coherence.

Notes: This paper presents the development process, methodology and findings from the first stage of an ongoing collaborative research project undertaken to determine the performance indicators employed by hotel general managers. The main focus of the study is to gain a greater understanding of the decision-making context in which general managers of national and international hotel chains use performance measures (with properties located in Europe). In particular, interest is directed at assessing the match between the "key indicators" used by general managers, their "interpretation" of the indicators and the use made of the indicators for "decision-making". By drawing upon theoretical concepts and empirical evidence in the literature, the content examines performance measurement in a hotel industry context and presents the analysis and evaluation of quantitative results.

Notes: Presents an evaluation of the theoretical context and practical application of different methods of hotel valuation, with particular emphasis on the methods related to the income-generating capacity of a hotel. The findings reveal a wide range of variation and complexity between methods and that each method has benefits and limitations and requires adjustments and assumptions in different market conditions. However, it is concluded that the more sophisticated "income-based" income capitalisation methods constitute the most effective basis for a framework on which to derive the open market value for a hotel as an ongoing business entity, but that one or more of the other main valuation approaches should be drawn on in order to effect the reconciliation of a hotel's final value.

Notes: Purpose - The aim of this work is to explore performance measurement practices in the context of an independent hotel in Northern Cyprus. Design/methodology/approach - The study was conducted in a 392-room five-star resort hotel over a nine-week period using multiple data collection methods comprising semi-structured interviews, documentation collection and observation. In the context of the case hotel, three decision-making groups - employees, managers, and regional executive - were involved in order that the performance measurement and the decision-making mechanism could be described. Findings - The findings indicated six main themes, which are grouped under business dynamics and overall performance, employee performance, customer satisfaction, financial performance, and innovative activities performance measures, so that understanding the type, the communication process and the purpose of utilising the performance measures is described and analysed. Originality/value - This paper presents the results of performance measurement practice of an independent hotel setting, providing in-depth information about the context of the business, the decision-making process and the information flow. Also, the paper documents performance measurement practices in the hospitality management field, providing an insight into the kinds of measures used by decision-makers of an independent hotel business in Northern Cyprus.

Notes: This article presents the results of a project undertaken to increase the effectiveness of decision makingat the property level in the Europe, Middle East, Africa division of an international hotel chain. The objective of the project was to provide the basis for a more informed approach to routine financialplanning and control decisions of property management teams with the aim of enhancing operational profitability. The techniques used to underpin the framework are evaluated in relation to their practical application in the decision-making process and the rationale and method of implementation of the management development programme is explained. The framework was approved by the company's management board for implementation throughout the division and feedback from property management and assessment of financial results suggest the approach has made a significant contribution to profit improvement.

Notes: On 24 November 1971 the British and Rhodesian Governments agreed on a set of proposals designed to bring to an end the constitutional dispute between their two countries.1 A final endorsement of the proposals by ‘the people of Rhodesia as a whole’ would result in the lifting of British economic sanctions,2 and the recognition of Rhodesia as an independent state and the present régime as the legal Government. The terms of this settlement have been widely publicised and will therefore not be reproduced here. However, the essential features of the constitutional mechanism as far as they may have been affected by economic trends are as follows:
