Notes: [Auszug] Salvinia was first recorded in Australia in 1952 and by 1976 it was present in many tropical and subtropical rivers and lakes and was more widespread than water hyacinth, which entered the country in the late 1800s8. Salvinia has achieved unacceptable population densities in Australia and elsewhere ...

Notes: With the regard to the development of modern car bodies the focus lies on low productioncosts, environmental sustainability and high security standards. In order to meet these requirementsthe weight of modern car bodies has to be reduced consistently. Amongst other things, this becomespossible by the use of new high and ultra high strength steels. These materials are characterised bytheir high strength, good ductility and a high absorption capacity. In addition they have a lowerdensity in comparison to other steels. TRIP and TWIP steel belong to these high and ultra highstrength steels as well as iron-manganese steel. The development of new materials also puts new demands on the joining technologies used forproducing semi finished products and parts of car bodies. Due to its high flexibility, its goodautomation and the minor influence on the work piece, laser beam welding is an establishedprocedure in the automotive series production. The high cooling rates in combination with a carbonequivalent of the new materials which is usually higher then 0.4% lead to a martensiticsolidification of the weld seam. Martensite is characterized by its low ductility and thus affects theforming capability as well as the absorption capacity of the welded parts. In order to avoid this effect a new process has been developed within the scope of thecollaborative research program 362 (SFB 362, 1993-2005) at the Laser Zentrum Hannover. Usingthat process the weld seam structure is inductively annealed directly after the welding process.Experiments with high strength steel like TRIP700 and H320LA have shown that the temperingleads to an increase of ductility. The process is suitable for butt joints and overlap joints and is to be transferred into industrial usagewithin the scope of the project “Laser Beam Welding of Car Body Parts Made of High and UltraHigh Strength Steel”. Based on the results obtained in the SFB 362 continuous investigations willbe made in order to qualify the process for boron alloyed steel and iron-manganese steel

Notes: Abstract The biology and host specificity of a South American flea beetle,Disonycha argentinensis Jacoby was investigated in quarantine facilities in Australia. Damage from feeding by larvae and adults ofD. argentinensis onAlternanthera philoxeroides (Mart.) Griseb (alligator weed) indicated that it might be a useful biological control agent for the plant when growing in terrestrial situations. Complete development of the immature stages took place only onAlternanthera philoxeroides. Adults produced a few feeding scars onBeta vulgaris L. (beetroot) andAmaranthus spinosus L. (spiny amaranth) but failed to oviposit. Host specificity studies indicated that establishment of this beetle in Australia would be without significant risk to nontarget plant species.D. argentinensis was first released in Australia in 1980.

Notes: Abstract The host specificity of a chrysomelid beetle,Calligrapha pantherina Stål, from Mexico, was verified in the CSIRO quarantine facilities in Brisbane, Australia on 80 species of plants in 28 families, either closely related to Malvaceae or in families containing economically important species.C. pantherina oviposited and developed successfully on its preferred host,S. acuta, and less successfully onS. rhombifolia andS. spinosa, all of which are weeds in Australia. Aspects of oviposition, larval development, and adult feeding and longevity ofC. pantherina are described.C. pantherina was released in Australia during 1989 and readily established onS. acuta but established at only a few sites onS. rhombifolia.

Notes: Abstract The biology and host specificity of the seed-feeding bruchids,Acanthoscelides quadridentatus (Schaeffer) andA. puniceus Johnson, from Mexico were studied in quarantine facilities in Australia. Distinguishing characters in the genitalia of each species are illustrated. Oviposition was recorded on 16 of 73 species of plants tested but larvae died without entering pods or seeds, except onMimosa invisa K. F. P. von Martius andM. pigra L. Larvae entering seeds ofM. invisa died in the first instar. The bruchids were clearly specific toM. pigra and were subsequently released as part of a program for biological control of this weed in the Northern Territory, Australia in April 1983 and thailand in July 1984.

Notes: Abstract Neohydronomus affinis was imported into Australia as a potential biological control agent for the floating aquatic weedPistia stratiotes. Quarantine studies demonstrated that this weevil was host specific toP. stratiotes and it was released into the field in 1982. Subsequently it was released as a control agent for this weed in several other countries. In AustraliaN. affinis reduced infestations ofP. stratiotes by 40% or more within 12–18 months. The results are discussed in relation to its effectiveness in other parts of the world. We concluded thatN. affinis effectively controlsP. stratiotes in tropical regions (to lat. 22°), but in cooler regions its effectiveness fluctuates with seasonal conditions.

Notes: Abstract Seasonal fluctuations in populations of the introduced speciesTeleonemia scrupulosa Stål and damage by this insect to common taxa ofLantana camara, were observed at several field sites and experimental plots. At 2 plots effects ofT. scrupulosa populations on untreated plants were compared with plants protected by application of insecticides. On untreated plants damage varied seasonally and between taxa ofL. camara. In general attack byT. scrupulosa reduced fruiting and caused severe short term foliage damage. Combined with severe stress from some other cause heavy attack may result in long term damage or death to plants. However Common PinkL. camara was more resistant to damage than were the other taxa studied. At the time of these experiments other insect species were at very low population levels and did not have observable effects onL. camara.

Notes: Abstract The biology and host specificity of a colony ofLixus cribricollis Boheman originating in Morocco were studied in quarantine in Australia.L. cribricollis adults are long lived, have an aestivation and are univoltine.Rumex crispus L.,Emex australis Steinheil andE. spinosa (L.)Campdera were shown to be the only satisfactory hosts of 40 species of plants from 17 families that were exposed to sexually mature adults ofL. cribricollis. Normal feeding and occasional oviposition were observed on some other plants within the same family,Polygonaceae, including the minor crops rhubarb and buckwheat, but almost invariably larvae died in the 1st instar. It was concluded thatL. cribricollis may be a useful biological control agent for the weedsR. crispus, E. australis andE. spinosa and that establishment of this weevil in Australia would be without risk to non-target plants.

Notes: Abstract The host range, distribution and aspects of the biology ofTingidae recorded from plants in the genusLantana are reviewed. Tingids possess attributes predisposing them for use as biological control agents. Possible benefits from importation of a larger gene pool ofTeleonemia scrupulosa are discussed. The host ranges ofT. elata andLeptobyrsa decora were studied under simulated field conditions. Results indicated that both species are restricted almost entirely toL. camara. SubsequentlyT. scrupolosa, collected from diverse habitats throughout its range,T. elata andL. decora have been liberated in Australia.

Notes: Abstract The tingidTeleonemia harleyi Froeschner from Trinidad is known to destroy the flowers ofLantana camara L. and so prevent seed formation. Colonies caged on plants destroy all flowers. Studies on the host range ofT. harleyi indicate that it is highly specific, feeding and ovipositing only onL. camara. It attacks all pest taxa ofL. camara naturalized in Australia and should be a valuable addition to the biological control complex. It was approved for liberation in Australia in September 1972.
